I have a 01 f250 with the 7.3 currently sitting at 193,625 miles and have what sounds like an injector knock. What do I need to be looking for when buying injectors? As far as I know the injectors are stock.
Injector knock can sometime occur when the hold-down bolts have lost their torque.
You can find remanufactured injectors all over the web - Full Force Diesel and Performance Injection Systems are the flavor of the month here, but there are others. I tried modified reman and new injectors. I'm sure the remans would have lasted a while, but I didn't like them. I got new (modified) and I definitely like those. Reman averages out to about $1K for a set of 8 ADs (stock for Powerstroke) or ACs (stock High-Torque from International), where the new are closer to $2K. If you go the AC (or more power) route, you'll need tuning and I suggest you read the "Custom Tunes" link in my signature before you consider them.
You don't have to replace all eight, but 200K miles is sneaking up on the time where you can lose one here and there - plus your injector O-rings could possibly use some attention. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, you can check your injector hold-down bolt torque before you open your wallet. They need to be 120-130 INCH-pounds. If you find one below 50 inch-pounds, then the O-rings and copper washer on that injector should really be replaced - and that would be your knocker. There is a significant risk this is an exercise in futility, the injector could just be bad - but at least you'll have a chance to inspect your Under Valve Cover Harness connections and you'll gain familiarity with how your engine works.
With the help of the forum, replacing an injector on your own is not too bad for the novice (I am unaware of your mechanical skills)... just get input before you start.
