Ok, it is an 02 7.3 4x4 Ex, 160k
wife calls, said truck died in driveway, THANKFULLY they were coming and not going, AND were in the driveway!
She said it would crank, but no start.
I get home, open hood, check for anything obvious, nothing, starts right up, I drive it all around, maybe 2 - 3 miles, all was fine. had it hooked to my van to jump start it, got van going, Ex was dead. hmmm rolled up jumper cables, climbed in Ex, started right up,,, started to back up, died,,, waited a min. or two, started right up, then died. The longer I would wait, the longer it would run. Always cranked really strong. Went out this morning, it acted like the batteries were dead,,, WTH?!?!
As I type this, I am wondering about the fuel pump,,,
Thanks for any thoughts!
Post in he 7.3 forum, that sounds like it's going to be a very specific problem, maybe a high pressure oil problem from the sound of it but I'm not overly familiar with he 7.3 vs he 6.0
...Always cranked really strong. Went out this morning, it acted like the batteries were dead...
Dead... as in no crank or slow crank? Any clicking? I suspect your observation of longer wait equates to longer running may just be a coincidence, but don't hold my feet to the fire on that.
I can't see all that's taking place, but from your description - ensuring good connection at both ends of both battery cables would be in order. The CPS is almost always a suspect with a stalling truck, and it's cheap/fast... so try the spare one you have in the glove box.
Do you have a CEL? If so, do you have any way to ck for codes? Just guessing here but I would say IPR or the coil on the IPR is going bad. Anyway to monitor IPR/ICP duty cycle?
No CEL, I did swing by the house, had wife turn key to start, batteries both were way low, 6.49 and 7.32 under KO run position, so therefor, I ran by NAPA and got 2 new $231 worth of batteries, I will install those this eve. when I get home and see what she does from there. I did have a P0603 this morning when I checked for DTC's,,,
I shall see what new batts do!
Update in the A.M.
Ok,,, after new batts, went for a drive,,, DIED again, had to call wife to come tow me home,,, started reading up and searching, decided it sounded like the IPR. Took it out, was stuck, took some severe "tapping" to get it to break loose! Cleaned it up, all back together, it is idling in the driveway, I am eating my ice cream and then gonna go for a drive. Hoping that was/is it!
Two dead batteries and a stuck IPR at the same time... you're having a great week. Imagine what would have happened without FTE drumming IPR and batteries into your head - the Stealership would have sold you an IDM.

Never, NEVER, EVER do I go to the Stealership!!! I maintain all my fleet, from my 63 to the Ex and my F350,,, now the wife's Lexi,,, THAT is a different story, I can't even get UNDERNEATH it to change the oil, plus, the detail and oil change is 69.00!! Can't beat that, and she knows to NEVER have them do anything other than the oil!
And YES, Thanks to all the FTE'ers, AND the search function and previous posts, found one with same symptoms, run 10-15 min and just die, wait, cool down a tad, run for a shorter time, die,,, I will probably order one just as a CYA, but it does appear to be GTG. Wife will be driving it around today, so we will see! And the Batteries were on the "to do" list, just didn't want to fork out the bones until I had to, they were from '06'!! Not gonna cry about that to hard! I had changed the CPS out a few years ago in the Rite-Aid parking lot, so I was pretty sure that was not it.
Again, Thanks and I will say a Prayer as she is running around today that that was it!
