The new mechanic has had it suggested to him by a tranny shop to change the gear oil to synthetic...........is that the Mercon stuff, and what would be the specs on it?
The mercon fluid is not a synthetic fluid. If you want to use synthetic, use any synthetic fluid that will replace mercon or dextron auto trans fluid. Redline or mobil 1 are probably the best and easiest to find.
Had the same problem with our 93 F350. It was just like a clutch that needed an adjustment. Unfortunately, there's no adjustment on it. The pedal freeplay was several inches, and the clutch wasn't fully dis-engaging when the pedal was on the floor.
A neighbor had the same problem and suggested an adjustable slave cylinder push rod from NAPA. It was tricky to install, had to figure out how to release the clip that retains the rod in the cylinder, but it was well worth the effort. The clutch is like a new truck now.
That would work but one is not available for a Ranger. Also , the F-series of that era were bad about the firewall cracking whick created a lot of flex in the master cylinder area.
