1997 F-150 Brake Problem
In my 1997 F-150 S-Cab 4x4, I step on the brake pedal and it's hard going down, then it will not return unless I pull it up with my foot. I pulled the incoming vacuum line off and it's got a steady 20 inches of vacuum at idle. When I shut the engine off then remove the check valve from the booster, it re-pressurizes. I also picked up a booster from a fresh junkyard truck just for comparison, and when I installed that, the problem remains.
Beyond that, I'm a little stumped what else it could be. I was thinking the return spring in the master cylinder could be bad, but I would think then the brakes would hold regardless if I pulled up on the pedal.
Anybody have any ideas what it could be? The truck is a 4th vehicle almost 18 years old and pretty beat up (shouldn't have let my sister drive it). If it starts getting into ABS and other expensive parts, I'll probably just scrap it, but I'd like to fix it if I could.
