"surging" issues with the X

Good afternoon,

Recently I started having some issues with the engine losing power then "surging". I will do my best to describe it... So while the truck is rolling at a steady speed I can hear basically the turbo disengage (like it is electrical and just turns off) then it will pick right back up and start whistling again. It did this to me couple days ago and just did it again this morning. I watched the ICP numbers on my SGII and they don't fall or rise when this happens. The first time it happened I pulled over, turned the truck off waited a minute or so and fired it back up and it "solved" the issue. This morning, I left it running and programmed the SGII to read FLP, FCV and one other but I remember the numbers were 13.5 13.5 and 48. If I did a poor job explaining I apologize, this is my first diesel and usually the wife drives it so don't have much experience with it. (bought it Aug 6th then went away for 6 weeks and now am just starting to get some experiences with it). Let me know what suggestions you may have.

PS. Where do I find a reference that states what all the "normal" parameters for each X-Gauge should be?

I see that you have an 03. First, take the truck and have it code scanned. The SGII won't do that on an 03. Are you running OEM filters? What kind of oil? Do you have any repair history on the truck? Something you can do yourself is pull and clean the EGR valve. Also, you may have a sticking turbo. How is the truck normally driven? Does it idle a lot? Is it a grocery getter and spends a lot of time "in town driving"? It may just need a good "blowing out".

Are you running OEM filters?

I am not. I bought the lifetime oil change from the dealer I bought it from. They installed Performax filter.

What kind of oil?

15W40 Rotella

Do you have any repair history on the truck?

I do, well I have the OASIS from the dealership.

It does idle when parked for 3-10 mins. My wife drives it but she has expressed how she enjoys getting off the line quickly so I know it gets driven "hard" and when I drive it I do get on it sometimes. Also, last weekend it was driven 200 miles at 80mph pretty much the whole time. Then a couple days later (when I turned it off and on and it corrected the issue) I drove it about 90 miles one way and back at about 75 to 80.

I think I need to add that two days after buying it my wife tried taking it down to San Antonio and she broke down and when I came into town I went and replaced the ICP and it ran fine on the way home (about an hours drive at 80). I didn't replace the pigtail but have one on hand to, just haven't gotten around to it.

Them not using an OEM oil filter is an issue. It's cheap for them and expensive for you down the road. Rotella is "OK".

Most autoparts stores can code scan your truck and will do so for free.

Big WAG but start with an OEM filter. 6.0's can be very touchy in this area.

Whats the Values for ICP and ICPV,also post MAP, and Baro or bst ?
Only use OEM or raycor filters and never give up the OEM oil cap.
your Injectors will like the 5w 40 synthetic better.
when was the last HFCM water sep drain and filter change?

I will talk with a friend at the dealership and see what we can do about using an OEM filter. Another friend of mine has a scanner and will report back after we scan.

Give me until tomorrow to get you these answers. One I know I can't answer (for two reasons.. just bought the X and two, what is an HFCM? I assume it has to do with the fuel filter?) I will set up the SGII tonight and run the X tomorrow to get those numbers.

HFCM = horizontal fuel conditioning module aka fuel pump

Regardless if you have to purchase the oil filter yourself, do NOT allow them to use that filter in your truck. you're just asking for problems down the road. There are MANY examples of that in this forum.

Just talked with my friend, I will use OEM from here on out. How important is synthetic in the long run? Just paid a grand for lifetime oil changes...

HAHA!!

I think I should change the fuel filters too soon.

I think someone eluded to the turbo going bad/getting stuck? Is there a way to fix that without rebuilding it?

Thank you all for being so kind to chime in on something that has probably happened to someone else just impossible to "search". I do try that option but it's impossible to find.

If I can revisit the description to ensure I described it properly...
When it happens it sounds like the truck has no turbo for about two to three seconds then it kicks back in. Also, for the first time for me, at slow speeds (25-30mph) it sounded like it was missing....

Rig has 200K on her... thought maybe that would be important too.

Watch the Scan Gauge Values, MAP,EBP.
you can also clean the Map to manifold connection that little hole gets clogged , ( don't clean the MAP senser it self) just where the connection screws down to the Intake. also the EBP and Hose you can run a weed eater line down to clear ,I always like to pull the line and make sure the line and hole is clear ( don't spray the senser just make sure the hole is open).
post the values I have sent you .

You need to take these values like this
koeo= key on engine off take down the values
low= engine Idol , no ac , heat radio
high = 2500 rpm same thing nothing on but truck
Its to hard to take values driving to compare too.
