Caliper piston siezed, OH NO!

So what do you do when your 45mi. from home with a trailer, and your rear passenger caliper is smoking hot. I was delivering 3 fireplace surrounds I had made when I pulled up to the last house and smelled something burning while going back to the trailer. I looked under the truck and noticed a faint wisp of smoke from the rear pass. brake. Great, now what do I do? I have AAA, but also a trailer. My soluton was to jack it up and pull the caliper to see what was going on. The slide pins were fine as I had just lubed them a few months ago. I went into the house where my tools (wood) were, I'm also triming the house, and cut a block of wood to take up the space of the rotor. I hung the caliper up out of the way with a tuggum strap. The block I cut was 5 1/2x 1 1/8x 1 1x2. I used a few zip ties the long way around the block to hold it. Drove home with no problem. The block is now in my kit. The confidence I've gained working on my own truck thanks to my FTE brothers made an otherwise," Oh crap, who do I call and how much will it cost" incident, into a miner inconvenience.

I have it in my head, but you should take a picture for those who don't get it. Very clever. I'll try to rep.

*EDIT* Gotta spread 'em.

I realize we're slipping off topic a bit, so I'll sneak this in - was the trip in the Superduty?

That's the kind of trip that opens the horizons for the young. Good job.

I carry a few small nails for this or blown lines. Remove the line ahead of the problem and place the shank of the nail in the steel line. Reassemble the fitting and head of the nail will shut off the flow fluid past it.

Our emergency kits get weirder and weirder as the miles rack up: Block of wood, saw, nails, strap, etc.... thousands of years of civilization and we still carry the same tools on our travels that they did when humans first sailed the seas.

So the caliper was still hydraulically connected to the brake system? - if so, nice roadside fix!

Yes, the block took the place of the rotor and gave the free piston something to push against. Strapped the caliper up to the frame enough to keep it from hitting anything. When I took the caliper off, I put 100psi of air in it, and pop, out came the good piston. The other was stuck tight.
