So, people use the term "Cobra heads" very very loosely - esp on Ebay - when selling or describing their GT40 heads. The only true F1ZE-AA "Cobra/SVT" head are on the very limited production Shelby AAC cars... if you have F1ZE-AA stamped heads on any other Mustang - rest assured they came off a '96-'97 Explorer and are just Marine heads. Better term when using the F3ZE-AA/F4ZE-AA are SVT (Specialty Vehicle Team) GT40 Ford Motorsports heads since they were used on both SVT Cobra Mustang and SVT Lightning trucks.
I no idea...I didn't really look at them all that much I was picking up other parts at the time and was not really thinking about the motor at that time...I just happened to see them and called him on them a few days later and asking for the casting code on them.
Yeah I know we are going to tear the motor down first to make sure the block is in good enough shape for a rebuild be for ordering parts. the tear wont be happened for another few weeks. Were thinking if it has not been touched we are going to have it punched and honed 10 or maybe 20 over.
I would suggest that you use the springs recommended by the cam grinder.
I would not assume that it will need boring or the crankshaft turned. I have built enough engines that I have learned that it is impossible to guess the internal condition without disassembly and measurement. Don't make parts buying plans until it is disassembled, measured and magnafluxed and closely inspected.
Not only do you want to know what size bearings, rings and such you need, but you want to MAKE sure that you don't invest a bunch of machining money into a casting or forging with flaws, cracks or otherwise substandard.
Welp...one step closer. I just picked up a drivers side door for the truck. Just waiting for the cab corner, floor boards and rear quarter panels to show and it will be to having the body work done.
if your gentlemen are still following, I got lucky and found a 1971 302 rebuilt motor with zero miles on it for $250. The guy who sold it to me owns a shop where he restores cars. He told me he restored every thing in factory specs along with the heads. the only change to the motor was a RV cam to add some extra power. The only thing I now have to buy for it Is the dual plane intake, 600 carb and headers.
What headers would you guys suggest using with this 71 302?
lol hahah I know...Right. He said the same as me that its an old school add on. I still might go with a different cam. I really had my mind set on that comp cam. OBTW....the guy with the gt40 heads is now asking way to much money now that he knows what he has.
I do not prefer hedders , but , I have used headman hedders with good results . Pace setters , I think , on some tuners years ago . I go stock and quiet now . Call me old , I even made my CB550 quieter ! Thinking about putting a quiet pack on my 4 wheeler ....
