hard to shift

2000 ranger 3.0 auto 4wd hard to shift. are the cables known to stretch?

What cables? There are none that are part of the shifter or the clutch.

By hard to shift, are you stating that it shifts rough? Or does it not shift till a high RPM? You'll have to be more specific on the issue at hand. Thanks.

no the shift lever on the colum is very stiff and hard to move also it seems that it is a little off when lined up with th prndl

Sounds the linkage is messed up. As for it being off, it's a common ford issue and my older ones have always done it. I never bothered to fix it. But its all to do with the linkage going from the shifter to the trans. That is the best place to start!

First ensure the torx bolts holding the shift lever to steering colume are tight. There has been issue with transmission control switch on the side of the tranny causing this issue. And lastly the shift cable can get bound up.
