I am having an arguement with a buddy about his 6.0 vs. my 7.3, arguement is at which point do I need to Stud the heads due to PSI increase? How many studs there are in a 7.3 vs. 6.0. He is saying that I should stud my heads immediately because the 7.3 is known to have the heads float if you increase PSI due to turbo swap. I have heard people running almost 35 psi without studding the head. He is also saying that if I would have bought a 6.0 I would not have to do any of this. My only thought is that ok, he's excited he has a new truck, doesn't know what he is dealing with as far as that 6.0 is concerned, or he is dilusional, or just has a case of cranial rectal inversion. I know what the 7.3 is capable of, and have witnessed the 6.0 horror. But I guess I need some other opinions or facts about the differences.
Boost pressure doesn't blow head gaskets. You could run 40psi and if the tune keeps cylinder pressure in check it will be fine.
For example my truck dynos 515-520hp on a few different dynojets. It has stock head bolts and that was at 37psi boost. This is my daily driver and I beat the hell out of it every day. Just because mine holds though doesn't mean yours will. My head gaskets do have 390k miles on them. Lol
I would recommend studding if you do a bigger turbo and injectors though. Most turbos with a set of stage 2s will be in the 35-40psi range. Better to be safe.
thanks guys. I appreciate the replies. He is new to diesel trucks and still learning. I think he just got bad info. and bad info in is going to produce bad info out.
like said earlier, cylinder pressure will make the difference but if you are looking for a number at which to serious consider head studs I would set it at 35 psi. 40 psi is a must have for me.
I'm done with the arguement with him, I showed him the posts and he just said "oh". He really like the post about lifting his cab to do his studs. Good job fellas, thanks for the black and white to shut him down.
Could some tell this old man what the diff in holding power of studs over head bolts and why ??
Smokie
I don't own a 6.0, and am likely speaking way out of turn. But I seem to recall the head bolts on the 6.0 are torque to yield....and studs, are well, studs.
