I am in the process of shipping a 1956 Shortbox bed to someone in the midwest. Everthing but the tailgate (crossmembers included though)...How much does anyone thing this weighs?
I have to call up the trucking company to ship (only way I know how) and they will ask me the weight. I'm betting it will be fairly expensive.... ??? Thanks jim
Yes it will be expensive. Have the measurements handy as it may be a factor. Some of the vendors have cut deals with trucking companies. You're probably going to have to keep dialing until you find one that will do it reasonable.
Somewhat off topic, but I just sold my front fenders which are too large for UPS. I used Greyhound Bus and shipped them to Maine. It was much cheaper than truck shipping. They won't ship a bed though.

'fenders you never fail to amaze me. Heck I would not have thought of Greyhound to ship a hub cap let alone a fender!
Funny thing, I sold a set of rear fenders for a 50 Ford truck on ebay awhile back, and neither UPS or FedEx or Greyhound would ship them! So I wound up keeping them. I think there are some Greyhound terminals that will not ship items like fenders, although I think I'm the only one I know so far that had that problem with them. Go figure!!
All the major shippers (non-truck) have size cutoffs for dimensional weight. I ebay a lot so I got familiar with them. Choose a box just a little too big, and sometimes the cost will rise 50%, or become non-shippable. Greyhound has very large limits. You can't ship a hood or bedside, most any fender and maybe a door is small enough though.
Just for an example, UPS does have some large package service I never heard of. Iowa to Maine was $111 per fender. Couldn't pack them both together. Greyhound should have cost about $65 to $70 for the pair packaged together. But when I brought it to the counter she said looks heavy to me, I'm not lifting it. What's it weigh. I said at least 45 pounds and she said let's just go with it. No tape measure or nothing. Should have been a double oversize charge for length. Anyway, I paid $41. I'm sure I won't always get that lucky. You do have to cover your shipment with cardboard with Greyhound.
Thanks for the info 'fenders, I'll check into it a little more! I did ship a hood with Greyhound once! Another item I sold on Ebay. It was fiberglass so it was light, but it was a hair over the size limit, they took it anyway after I pleaded with them! I guess it depends somewhat on who's working the counters and the mood they're in on the day you take something like that in to ship it!

That's exactly what it depends on. I bought one of the fenders I just sold. It arrived last year VIA UPS. It is way over the UPS size limit. Not to mention the price they wanted for the deluxe service. It's really tough to buy or sell big stuff. You never really know if you can close the deal until you try. I can't believe you sent a hood Greyhound. That's great. Did you buy a window seat? I think 74x53x24 is the published limit.
I know what you mean about buying and selling large items, but I've sold a few big things on ebay! If they want it bad enough, they'll pay to ship it!
Yes I really did ship a hood with Greyhound, it was a factory '66 Mercury Cyclone GT fiberglass hood.
It went from Calif. to Florida and only took like 3 days to get there!
I squeezed it into the tightest box I could get, it just barely covered the hood, and was still a couple inches oversized for Greyhound, but they took it I think because it was so light. I'll bet the box weighed more than the hood!
You could pick the whole hood up with your pinky finger, it was light as a feather!
The guy I sent it to was happier than heck that I was able to get it to him, I think it only cost about $45.00 to ship it, if I remember right.
