possible axle swap?
Hey guys, im driving an 86 f150 stepside with a 351w. As of right now most everything is stock. Im running 35x14.5x15's but I want to go up to 38 's or 40's. I've been hearing a lot of horror stories regarding stock axles in this aspect and was looking into some dana 60's. Im not trying to spend a LOT of money so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a different type of axle or if i needed to even swap them at all. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

You are getting into a lot of money and custom fabbed stuff to run those size tires. If you drove it only occasionally on the street, you might get by with what you have, but it would be risky.

I've been able to keep a D44 alive with some skinny 38s, but I had to be VERY careful with the skinny pedal and sometimes that wouldn't even be enough. I also had to replace ball joints 2-3 times a year, depending on how much trail time it saw.
Anything bigger then that and you really need an upgraded drivetrain, which is the D60 for the front.
