fuel pump problem?
I'm not necessarily new to the site, just new to the expy. I recently bought a 2001 eddie baur with the 5.4. It ran great for a couple months then one day it wouldn't start after I got off of work. I thought it was the fuel relay so I replaced it. Then I went grouse hunting a week later and the expy wouldn't start up in the mountains. The next day I went up to the mountain to try to get it to start and it did. Today I changed out the fuel pump because I had been told that when a fuel pump starts going out it will work intermitenly. After changing the fuel pump and fuel filter, it won't start. I primed it and I can hear the pump kick on and it will try to fire about every fifth crank, it just won't run. Anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? I'm stumped.

You hear the pump every 5 turns of the key? Have you checked pressure on the fuel rail? I know theres going 2 be people frowning on this but in a squeeze I have stood off to the side and pressed the valve on the fuel rail while someone turned the key to see if it had pressure.
are you getting spark?
Also If your pumps going out you can sometimes buy sometime by banging
on the tank

Thanks. I dropped the tank again and realized I put the pump into the hanger backwards. Now the expy will start, but it backfires and won't go over twenty. Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

Fixed it. The pressure was at 2 psi. Just a little low. Put another new pump in and now it runs well. The only problem is that if I give it full throttle, it feels like it drops down a gear and won't go over 4500 rpms. If I ease up just a hair, it shifts and accelerates just fine.

You also said it "backfires."
Some get backfire confused with after burn. Backfire refers to a hickup, with fuel burning back into the intake due to ignition timing or burnt intake Valves, allowing gases to push back into the intake.
Afterburn refers to a lean condition where you hear the explosion through the exhaust.
If I'm guessing, afterburner is the condition.
You might check your fuel pressure regulator to ensure you have adequate injector pressure and check your fuel filter to eliminate obstruction issues.
