I recently bought a rebuild kit for my NP435 and got it all back together. The problem is that it won't go into 3rd or 4th gear (it is not back in the truck yet). Even if I turn the shaft a bit, no go. All other gears seem ok, but once they are in gear I can't spin the shaft by hand and I think I should. Seems like something is binding. I called the tech line from the place I bought the kit from and they are puzzled too. They recommended loosening the housing for the input shaft and putting a second gasket on it, but that didn't help either. Any suggestions? I'm looking at tearing it all apart again and starting over, but thought maybe someone could shed some light on this for me. This is the first tranny re-build I've done, so I'm learning, but at this point I'm just frustrated.
Not the same transmission but I bought a 4 speed toploader that had been rebuilt. When I got it in my Bronco, I could not get it to go into 4th. I fixed it by putting a weaker spring on the detent that operated when going into 4th. This may not apply to your case, just thought I would mention this.
Thanks, I forgot to mention that I bought this tranny out of another vehicle. It shifted fine before I rebuilt it, but I had to replace the output shaft for a married 4x4 application, so I thought I'd also replace the synchros, etc. while I was in there.
Sounds like you might have installed the 3-4 synchro backward or something like that. Also, make sure the Reverse gear is slid all the way back, unless you want it in R. It has no detent in the transmission, so it'll slide with gravity and lock up any other gear.
Comet, i also have the NP435 and am converting it to 4x4 from 4x2. could you help me out a little. i need to know what peices you have to change.i know the output shaft, but does it use the same bearings??? are there any other parts i will need??? i already have the adapter that goes on the outside so all i really need is the internal stuff. also i am not going to rebuild it and it seems like the rear output shaft just pulls right out, i didnt want to pull it all the way out cause i wasnt sure! i would greatly appreciate any help or advice you can give!!!
For my kit, everything after the main carrier bearing at the back side of the case outward is no longer needed. My adapter has an oil seal in it, but that's it. The same main carrier bearing is used (although I used a new replacement).
WOW I SURE APPRECIATE IT. two more questions that would greatly help me. Where did you get the kit and how much did it run you???? again thanx alot for the help!!
My kit came from Advanced Adapters and it mates to their Atlas II t-case. It ran around $275 if I remember, but included new shaft, seals and adapter. I really don't know exactly what it cost since I bought it with the t-case
