My 1960 f-100 has the **** on the dash to turn the heater box on. Was there also a control box under the dash that allows you to control defrost, and temp? I keep seeing pictures of this chrome box that had the levers like this: How hard would this be to find if thats the case? Any help would be appreciated! -4speed
You probably already know this but, you can switch to de-frost with your current system by pulling out on the heater control ****.
The control you refered to in the picture was indeed a factory option, and was called the "Magicaire" system.
An air inlet on the righthand side cowl brings fresh air from the outside to be heated. The temperature of the air is controlled by a valve on the heater hose, which regulates the flow of coolant from the engine to the heater.
I've seen them on e-bay from time to time, and once in a while you can get lucky in a salvage yard. Unfortunately, they are not being re-produced at this time.
Ok so it was an option. I always see it online and there's a place under my dash by the heater where there is no face to this cardboard piece that runs the entire length of the under dash. How can I tell if my truck had this or not? Thanks again kenny, -4speed
A couple ways I can think of to tell if your truck originally had "magicaire", but possibly was removed.......
Look under the dash for signs that anything was mounted directly below the heater ****.
Directly above your right air vent grille, there would be a side cowl air duct connected to the heater for Magicaire. On trucks with the standard system (without magicaire) there would just be a delete plate.
There would be a cable controlled valve on your heater hose with the Magicaire system.
Check for a hole in the firewall where the cable that controlled the heat control valve used to go through. It would be in the area of the heater core.
DANG ME
I DIDNT EVEN KNOW HEAT WAS OFFERED ON THESE TRUCKS....MANY A NIGHT WAS SPENT PAST OUT HALF FROZEN WISHING FOR HEAT.....WELL I GUESS ILL KEEP MY EYES OPEN
JUST DONT TELL MY WIFE....HEH HEH
Hi John, My new truck has that feature on it, when I get back home I'll see if I can forward any info. that might help you.

Ok thanks guy's, my truck has the delete panel so mine didn't come with magicair. I still can't figure out what went under my dash, under the radio but it recesed against the firewall(cab front). There's this piece of cardboard that runs the entire length of the cab front. Man, I need a digital camera so if anybody could tell me what probably went there it would be great. P.S The hole(rectangle) is about 7x3in. -4speed
To the best of my knowledge, nothing "factory" was ever installed there on the pickups. I can't say that for sure however, without seeing exactly what it is that you are describing.
Refering to "cardboard piece" that runs the length of the cab, are you refering to the firewall/dash insulator?
I'll take a look at my truck, and search through all my manuals again. If something was there (maybe on the bigger trucks), we'll find out for sure.
Ok I think this was an owner mod because I found the old piece of insulation and the cardboard cut-out down behind the insulation. Although I did manage to find this:
I know its a bad drwaing and yes that corner is rounded. I have no idea what that is? Anybody? Oh well, thanks -4speed
Also the picture isn't working just check my 1960 gallery. Thanks.
