I have an occasional can. Pretty good snack. Almost always get them packed in mustard, occasionally hot sauce, but never oil. Brand I find most consistently good is Brunswick (Product of Canada).

That's the only way I like them.....on my hook, in the water. King Salmon & stripers prefer them delicately filleted, wrapped tight with spider thread. :P (Cute Pic!!)
I like all kinds of fresh fish but these little guys can stay in the ocean. I even will eat Sashimi, and occasional anchovies in the Caesar salad, but Sardines, use them for bait.
Some people just don't know what good is. I prefer the ones in mustard sauce, but non-oil on saltines will do in a pinch. Just get that craving sometimes.
