I can tell you this...it is difficult to get and keep the old FORD TRUCKS running. I spent over $500 a few years ago getting the ol' 71 back up and running. New fuel pump, gas filters, plugs and points...Getting the gas tank cleaned out, water pump and new hoses, new battery and so it goes. I guess I will have to do it all over again if I want it running. I did all of the labor myself and still it was all very expensive. I actually wonder if it is worth it all as the dang thing has no power and no air. It is, as stated before, very difficult to drive. The old 360 is not and never has been a hot rod and I ponder about replacing it or selling the truck. Probably the latter....Make me an offer as it is a nice old truck, but I think I am through with it....I have driven old vehicles all of my life....lol....It is time for a change....I just don't have the TIME OR THE PATIENCE anymore....God bless you and your endeavors.....! P.S. I know I cannot sell it here, but just PLAY LIKE....lol...
These things are a labor of love and we drive and tinker with them to be different. You might as well go buy a KIA and follow the rest of the sheep.
There are tons of things you can do to make them fast, fun, fuel efficient and reliable. You choose not to do that and that's your prerogative. My truck is a 67 body with an updated suspension and drive train and something you cannot buy. IMO that's priceless.
I however will probably drive my truck until I'm no longer able.
If you'd rather have PS, PB, AC, etc you can get that by swapping trucks. I'm in the process of replacing my '70 F100 with no power anything, no AC, cruise control with an '81 F150 with all that because I'd rather have the creature comforts. But, that won't end the tinkering for me. If you're tired of tinkering, yep, dump the non-running truck get a new vehicle.
I have a swb Silverado...I just did not want to let the old 71 custom go for sentimental reason....I am now ready to let her go for the garage space...New battery and some more tinkering would do it....but with winter coming on...I don't think it is worth it anymore....IF you love your bumpside, then go ahead on and pay no attention to my complaining...I was once a proud driver for sure....God bless you and yours....Happy tinkering....!
KIA was the mother of all nomenclature goof-ups. It is up beyond Nova (doesn't go) in Spanish or Matador (killer).
If you have been to war you know what KIA means.
I am chilled every time I see the tag on the cars.
I assumed that I would get a lot of disagreement by posting about the "Old Ford Trucks"...but at least I post which is what they want you to do.....Keep in mind gentlemen, that I am no longer a KID and tire of working on vehicles....When I was getting her back in shape after a long extended period of GARAGE SITTING....it was one thing and then another.....I did some extensive work on the interior as well. It is in really great shape for it's age.....Bless you all for defending it, as it has a lot of history behind it and of course as stated earlier....There is a lot of sentiment there as well....Hope someone gets her that loved it as much as me....God bless
It can add up quickly if you don't watch it. Updating them to disc brakes, power steering, a/c and all that can get expensive and you still do not get the safety equipment and abs like in a newer truck and you don't have to get a payment to get those features. Myself, I'm going to kick my truck down the road not because I don't want to wrench on it, but for the fact that I've had a change in heart and want to go fast. Not just in a straight line either. I really would like a highboy myself but I'll figure that out later. It really was a impulse buy cause it looked really cool and it is but it is going to cost a fortune and would need things done to it that are beyond my wrenching ability and shop time is not cheap anymore.
Area351 nailed it. You're either in or not. Personally I would much rather spend $30,000 putting my old 69 together than spend 50,000+++ on a new crew cab. If spending $500 a few years ago was a burden then yeah I guess you gotta let it go...that's what, a 2 week payment on a new truck? But if you're tired of working on it then the passion is gone. Good luck with the Silverado...
I just came off a heavy construction site that was wall to wall with new trucks. Just for giggles one day I did a head count: 18 Fords, 13 Dodge, 7 Chevies. My 69 Crew got more attention than all the others combined.
