I've got a '96 F150 with a 4.9 liter straight 6. After taking my ride to a mechanic who gave my truck the once over troubleshooting a stopped up catalytic converter, called me and told me that the fuel pressure being delivered by the fuel pump in my front tank was extremely low. I told him the truth and said that the truck had been running that way for years, however, when I used the rear tank, it would not only feed fuel to the engine but in to the forward tank as well. Well, now it seems that even though I can put the selector switch on the front tank, turn the key on and stick a hose down the front tank, I can hear it run, but as the mechanic said, it's probably not enough. Well, I've decided to replace the pump, float, filter screen and sending unit. but all I really have to go on is my memory as to the capacity of the tanks. It seems to me that the front tank was 16 gals. and the rear tank was 17 gals. according to the owners manual, which I no longer have. Is there some way to tell exactly which pump I need before tearing into it by information in the VIN #?
For the 4.9l engine, chances are you have the "y" vin, just go to the parts store and tell them you need the midship tank pump. There should be only one that fits that application as the v8 engines have different pressure requirements from the straight 6.
