Possible bearing issues....need advice

I have a 1996 Explorer XLT 4x4 and I hear what I call barrings making a noise when I excelarate. If it is the barings in the rear end how expensive is this to fix? I love my truck but I'm on a fixed income and scared to death. I will not drive it until I get some sort of idea as to what and where I should take it.
Thanks all for your help in advance.

Lakajin, I've moved your post out of the 2004 - 2008 F-150 forum and into its own thread here in the Explorer forum.

most bearing noises are constant as the bearing turns. Wheel bearings on the outside end of the axle are loaded with vehicle weight all the time. That noise will happen when the vehicle is moving, throttle or not... The center pumpkin (differential) has bearings on the pinion and ring gear. It is possible to "coast" and have very little load on those bearings. That is a possibility. To check you can block the tires and park in neutral. Crawl under the truck and grab the drive shaft where it connects to the axle. Try to wiggle the shaft and input up and down. Try to rotate the drive shaft and see how much free play you have... Last, you can remove the rear cover , catch the 2 quarts of lube in a pan, and inspect the gears and bearings visually.
