Have an '89 F-350 SRW / 460ci. with dual tanks. The rear tank is relativly new with new pump, hardware and such. The rear tank gauge dosen't work properly. The front tank is original and leaks. I had a plugged fuel filter and changed that.
Problem:
With a full rear tank, I drive a few miles and suddenly no fuel delivery. Both gas caps are fine. Switch over to the front tank and no problem. Drive for awhile and switch back to the rear tank, no problem. Drive a few more miles and suddenly no fuel delivery. Repeat the cycle. There is a persistant smell of fuel although no leaks have been detected. Fuel consumption is up dramatically but no leaks.
Is this a vapor return line/vapor cannister problem ? Is it a tank switch or electrical problem ? Any help appreciated before I start replacing things. Thank you.
Don't replace anything until you know what's wrong. Throwing money at it rarely helps.
Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail when you have "suddenly no fuel delivery", and also the voltage at the rear fuel pump (the Haynes wiring diagrams show which wires).
