It can also take out the power valve, unfortunately.
You are right Ross as almost always. But having done it myself to
many times to remember I have never blown a power valve.
But than I never ran them up to WOT either. Just enough to get them to
pop a couple of times. I'm thinkin if she blew the power valve one was
revving it way to much or it was already weak.
But your info also needs to be put out there so folks know it Could happen.
Great reading Doc. So both all of my helpers were right! Same symptoms, different ailments. I spose that can happen with people too. Glad you got yours fixed, mine's nex. My son posted up a youtube video of the 37 with the load of logs. If I remember correctly it wouldn't idle then either. Intake noise from no air cleaner is what you hear most, but take a look and a listen. Don't know how to do a link, but its called "37 ford 1.5 ton with load of logs".... Kinda fun, and nice and short.
I just re-read that old thread of mine that I linked above. Damn I was naïve and excited about that truck. I should have pulled the intake like Ross suggested. I'm lucky I didn't mess something up bad. I showed the famous screwdriver to some guys at Truckstock. I will say this, I got three very enjoyable years out of that engine just the way it was. #8 cylinder has laid down on me--25 pounds of compression. I'm gonna swap it out with a spare I have just as soon as I get a second to breath.
GB SISSON, I'll check out that youtube video. I love your truck! Very cool!
I think you probably lost your head. Check out this at ( flattymisfire.mpg-you tube ) Probably seen it but I think it is worth looking at numerous times.
As much as I love old shade tree mechanic techniques, maybe I'll go the long route jic, and do it over the weekend. Easy carb for sure and a 1/2" wrench takes care of everything in the removal. (good old days)..... I already did the 'rev it up and put the palm of your hand over the carb' thing to try to pull the junk through. Always wondered how much suction the hand can take.......
A mechanic friend of mine used to do the palm of the hand trick often. The shop apprentice obviously saw it and was very impressed so thought he'd try it, on a diesel. A lot of broken hand bones and lots of time off work later........
Hey mytbtruck, I couldn't get that to site to work. I tried on google and youtube. Are you saying "I lost my head" like a cylinder head could be a factor in the v4 syndrome? I already know I've lost my head in the other, more well known way.... And thanks for the tip. I'll keep my hand outa my diesels. I have a few in my fleet, and I'm always tinkering with them. A friend was on a fishing boat in Alaska when the diesel 'ran away' and he looked around for something to block the intake as the rpms increased. He's a double XL sized guy, but the thing ate the entire carhartt hooded sweatshirt he tore off and threw on the intake. It took a piece of steel plate to shut it down. And OUCH about that guy's hand!
