Rough Idle

I just bought a 1989 F250 with fuel injection. It idles rough and burns rich. Sometimes it will stall when I stop at a light. This thing acts just like a carb would act with a stuck automatic choke. I have never owned an older vehicle with fuel injection before, so could somebody give me some ideas where to start on this project. Thanks for any help. ED

I would start with the basics just like with a carb truck. Check the base timing set to factory specs (10 deg BTDCon a 5.0L, not sure with yours (don't forget to pull the SPOUT connector)). Look for vacuum leaks. Also check for cracks/condensation in the distributor cap, fouled rotor, cross firing on the plug wires, make sure all 8 spark plugs are firing by pulling the wire and arcing to the plug. (use insulated pliers or plug/wire pullers )Then pull the codes off the computer, since that's what sets your air/fuel ratio.

It might be your IAC. Try removing it and clean it with a throttle body cleaner and clean the spot where the IAC goes in to the throttle body. Test it and see if that makes a difference and if not might be time to get a replacement IAC.
