fuel pump

so i changed my water seperater filter it went well but then i looked in the two catch cans in both was metal shavings and rust. do these trucks have socks on the pickup tube to keep this from happening? or do they pick up everything and burn through pumps? i need to take the filter back out and inspect it. i havent taken the other filter out yet but i hope theres no metal in there. this may have just ruined my week.

Wow, metal shavings. What could that be from? The rust in the top one is not good, means water is getting through the horizonital filter I guess. I've read a lot of posts where Ford used the rust to deny claims saying the rust was proof that the truck had gotten bad fuel.

Metal shavings from what, the fuel pump? some bad fuel you got with the metal in it. I guess you could say the filters are doing their job. Otherwise metal shavings would be in the fuel rail or the injectors. Ouch!! it might be worth dropping the tank and see whats up. Good luck.

Don't drive it start it!. Pull the top mounted (on the engine) and shine a light in the fuel bowl. What do you see there.

Pull that lower filter out again and check in there, what do you see?

At this point based upon what you are saying it sounds like you have a claim with your last fillup of fuel...or should I say water.

Filling stations usually will fix this with a fight and insurance will usually cover this type of claim as well.

They will cover this? I also consider this to be something that needs to be addressed if that will make my pump shel out the pickup tube needs to be modified or water seperator needs to be upgraded. But back to my current problem how do I get this ball rolling and get the fuel station to pay for this?? I didn't know that was an option
Thank you
Brian

There is a lot that depends here...got a fuel receipt? Go to the station and ask to make a claim. How many miles since fillup?

Do your inspection of the fuel bowl and keep all evidence.

Ther are a number of threads on the forum about it. Some have had luck filing a claim with their insurance company and let them deal with the fuel station. Also, if you did get bad fuel a number of other customers probably did also, so the retailer will know there is a problem. They may even have passed it on to the distributer already.

I always fill up with my bank card so I could call them for the information and I haven't driven it in about a month almost it was in the shop getting a new steering gear box then the fuel filter on the engine was pissing fuel the day I got it back I am fed up with the dealer and I am never going back to them again
I still have the metal shavings in the drain pan and the filter

Senix is one of the best resources on here. He says dont't run it. If it was mine I wouldn't even start it until I was sure the metal shavings were out of the fuel. Tearing up the fuel rails and injectors is scarey expensive. I think thats one of those 5 didgit figure fixes. The stock fuel tank is an easy drop, I did it to put my after market tank in and I'm 70 so any able bodied guy should be able to drop it in an hour or so and see what's in there. Good luck, let us know how you come out,

Ok so I went and picked up some big boy channel locks somebody previously stripped the engine fuel filter nut on top and my little channel locks weren't doing the job. But it is off now and there is rust in there i can get it out. So I think I will be fine after I drop the tank and inspect that then put on a new low press pump and change the filters. Though if I am wrong somebody let me know. I'm trying to learn here that's why I got this thing. Should I check anything else?

I would be going for a complete flush and filters and then maybe, just maybe you will get some use out of it.

Ideally if it were me I would be heading (on a trailer of course) to the dealer for a new hpfp and flush.

Waiting for it to come apart is going to cost a hpfp, injectors and a flush just to start with. I will be several thousands more if that hpfp ruins things.

Thank you senix I did some research and most people that had this problem did what I was going to do and only made it a few months then the high press pump went out and wow that's costly new injectors and everything to the fuel tank. Wow. So I am looking into a low press pump air dog makes some they cost less than stock and I have heard mixed reviews but is there one that is better? Should I start a new thread about this??

I would, and ask for feedback on what pump and any other experience with the change out. i always figure if it happened to my truck it probably happened to someone else and their experience could save me money or work. Good luck
