'97 Explorer - PCV Valve Location
I have a 98 XLT 4.0 6cycl SOHC.
I just changed it a few monthss ago. It was a major PAIN...but here's what may make it easier.
(keep in mind that the Valve on your '97 may be at a different location, but....)
Mine was just to the left (just a bit on the passenger side) of the back of the engine. There is barely enough room to see it...the top of your head will be pressing against the back of the hood).
The bottom of the Valve sits in one hose. The top (small end) plugs into a hard plastic T connector. The T connector is then connected to 2 thinner hoses. One goes around the back of the engine towards the driver side, the other goes further towards the passenger side.
Do yourself a favor. Once you find it, disconnect the thinner hoses from the top of the T connector (either at the connector or where the hoses plug into the engine) then tug the botton of the Valve out of the larger hose. (I had to "pop" or pry it out of that botton hose with a screw driver b/c it is in pretty tight).
ANYWAY....disconnecting the hoses and removing the Valve with the T connector still attached will be much easier, IMO. I did not figure that out until I put the new one back in. The T connector is Hard plastic, so you really have to press hard to get it to "snap" onto the rim of the small end (top) of the valve - almost impossible to do when it is still in the engine compartment.
One other thing. The original replacement valve only cost about $4 or $5 from the dealer, worth it, imo. But be careful when getting it from the dealer. Evidently, folks hardly EVER replace these things, and the parts guy may mistakenly include the T connector and/or hoses too. You only need the VALVE itself.
Hope this helps.
(BTW - Check your manual. If you have 60K or less, a dealer may replace it for free...mine manual said they would....but my truck was well over 60Kwhen I replaced it).

Thanx Kev100
I'll take another crack at it ...I'll also check my owners manual to see if the dealer has a free PCV replacement program.
Anyway, the level of detail of your response was one of the best I've seen on these kinds of car message boards.
Thanx again for taking the time.
