problems with power steering conversion

I got a 78 4x4 power steering gear box and a 81 2wd power steering box. I took the control valve - worm gear from the 2wd box and placed in the 4x4 box. The problems is no power steering and the oil just foams up. I run the pump with a drill to slow speed down. I have been doing this for days. Still foams at normal engine speed. What do I have wrong?

Review your procedures: West Coast Broncos

Resulting foam means it is cavitating.

Try this... lay the steering box on its side and then bleed it - pressurize while turning the steering wheel as if it were installed. Btw, the return line is the side closest to the rag joint so that should be on top.

Not sure if this will help you but it won't cost anything. Raise the front wheels off the ground and turn the steering wheel coast to coast about 20 times. Put it down and give it a test drive. You will need to have fluid in the pump. This will bleed the system of air.

I'v read on here and other forums where guys are having problems like that . Maybe it's a 4x4 problem as most of them say that's what they are working on. I'v changed out gears on a few and just put a new one on my 73 , never had any problems at all . It's a 2 wheel drive and it does use a different gear in a different location . I did it pretty much like John said only a little different. To start with i never used power steering fluid, i used auto transmission fluid like i have been doing for years .

I filled the pump , started the engine for about 30 seconds and shut it off . I did that about 3 or 4 times then let it sit for one hour. Removed the cap and never saw any bubbles. Topped it off and did like John said ,left to right a few times. Left it until the next day , topped it off , never needed much and started driving it. I never had to bleed any lines like i here others say they do. No bubbles, smooth easy steering , no noise , could not have been any easier .
