Guys,
I need some help to identify a little clank noise on my truck.
A few days ago, I started noticing a metal "clank" noise mainly when I step on the breaks and the truck is coming to a stop or sometimes as I release the breaks and start moving. I am not sure if this may be coming from the transmission, I hope it's not something with the transmission. I have checked the transmission and engine oil and they seem ok. Any recommendations on things to check for?
By the way, I have an F250 with a 460 and auto tranny. As far as I know both original and stock.
Thank you in advance!
U Joints, Center support brg if equipped and/or excess play in the differential.
Jack one rear tire off the ground. Block the tires and frame. Put trans in N.
Than rock the drive shaft back and forth and see where the play is at. There should
be none. It may even clunk while doing this.
2 wheel drive rig. Right?
Does it make the noise when the trans is shifted into Drive?
Check your U-joints. In fact, lube them to determine of the clank goes away.
Yes, I just noticed that the same noise occurs as I shift the transmission and now there is a little "kick" every time a shift... It didn't do this before.

I will start by checking the u-joints since it will be the cheapest thing. Thanks!
I had a noise like that in a 79 bronco once. Turned out the nut on the pinion yoke had backed off and was loose enough to move it by hand. I tried to tighten it but about 6 months later i had to get the bearings replaced as they got damaged from driving it that way.
