I have a 74' F-100 with a 390 in it. it is all stock except for the edelbrock intake, holley 600 carb and headers. I was wondering what size cam would really make this motor sweet without having to do alot of headwork. Or what are the best solutions for a cam and headwork?
Originally posted by buckawanga But when i put this cam in will i need to replace the springs to accomidate for the extra lift that it makes or will stock ones handle that much?
Yes to that ?? You should get the whole kit, lifters springs, push rods, whole enchilada. You should also be replacing your pressed in rockers with better stud type. The Performer Cam is a good one to 5000RPM, if looking for more, use Performer RPM, or Crower 280 (280 intake 286 exhaust with .551 lift)
A motor that runs great, sounds great, and performs when ever you need it to! I dont want it to have too much power, just more responsive and alot smoother accross the board. Would it be better to redo the heads if they havent already been messed with or just buy a good set that can handle a new cam?
Either of the Crane Cams listed above (PowerMax H-260-2, or PowerMax H-272-2) would suit your needs. The 260 is very mild and the 272 only slightly more aggressive. Its possible that the 272 would have a slight idle enough that those who really knew what to listen for would be able to tell it "has a cam" I think the 260 would behave basicly like stock except more power.
I would use the springs that match as well as pushrods, rockers, lifters timing set ect.
If you can afford tha Performer RPM heads they would be great, and the springs would be fime with either of these cams.
You didn't say which Edelbrock intake you have but if it is a Performer RPM you could go wilder on the cam if you have no objection to it having an "idle"
You also might look at Comp Cams line the High Energy 268 "K-Kit" which includes everything you need might be just the ticket for you.
Do you plan to do any towing? Have to pass any emission test?
thanks for the input. If I do tow it will be light, like maybe a lawn mower trailer. And for emisions, whats that? no i dont have to take the emisions test. The intake is edelbrock, its an older one that i scavaged from my fathers garage, all it says on it is edelbrock 427, it looks alot taller than my performer on my winsor so i assume it is the rpm but then again it might just be the performer. anywho it is a big difference from the stock boat anchor. ( its in my gallery so you can look at the side shot, you could probably tell from there )
this just in, i just discovered that the motor that i pulled the intake off of has the 428 cj heads ( cast # C8OE-N) might just have to clean them up and rebuild them. At least I think they are the CJ heads. Guess ill findout tomorrow when i clean them and look them up in a book.
