I found a 2008 f250 at a local car lot for 7800. The guy said it needed injectors. I asked him why he thought that it needed them. His answer was because it smokes bad. We started it and let it idle. Engine was kinda noisy and smoking a little. He said it would get worse. I revved the engine and it smoked more and you could smell oil. Guess my question is will the injectors do this or is the engine shot?
Could be a few things, first thing I think of is turbo seals, but unless your willing to drop an engine in it worse case I'd steer clear of it. A good mechanical type person might do good with it but ?????
I would want to go a compression test and a few other things before I was to buy this. I think I would pass unless you are just looking for parts or something.
I have no problem working on the truck. The truck overall is in great shape even in worst case it could still be a good deal.
I think you threw us off a bit with your question. Not something a very experienced mechanic would ask. A very experienced mechanic with a shop and a lift capable of taking the cab off the truck is probably the only one who should take on one of the 6.4Ls as a project. Also, one who has 12 grand or so laying around just in case a dealership has to replace the engine.
These trucks are extremely complex and expensive. Hope this helps.

My thoughts exactly. You don't necessarily need to take the cab off to get the engine out, but the parts on these trucks get very expensive, very quick.
However, if you can get a Ford tech to confirm what is actually what wrong with it, it might not be such a bad deal if its in nice shape.
No i did not buy it yet, but for the price of the truck even if it needed an engine it would still be a good deal.
Yeah, if you pay 8 and spend 12 you have 20 in a truck that should bring a couple thousand more than that. Question is, can you fix it for 12,000? I would say if you get past about 22 thousand you might as well look for one that doesn't need repair and save all the aggravation. It's now a 6 year old model and has a lot of detractrs especially if it was an early build. Unless you are a very good shade tree guy and want a project. It would probably be a great project with a nice pay off at the end. What you need is a brother in law with a big diesel shop. Good luck whichever way you go.
Ok so he is down to 6800 for the truck now. I have been looking at engines from salavage yards for between 5k and 8k with mileage on them from 50k to 120k. this is looking more like a too good of deal to pass up.
Sounds like a good deal and a fun project as long as it just needs what the sales guy says. My scare with this type of purchase, and i am a mechanic, is if they neglected the motor...what else major did they neglect...it's at a car lot selling it after all.
My advice would be get it to a ford shop and have them go over it for you...might cost you a 100 bucks but could save you thousands...just remember that with this type of project, once you start there is no turning back!
