Some people were just having a discussion about the Confederate flag, and what it means to them. More specifically, how the flag does *not* represent racism to them and what it does represent. There were no harsh words to anyone, tempers did not flare, and feelings were not hurt. Why was it necessary to lock the thread?
The general conversation forum is for the users of this board to decide what to talk about. So long as those basic rules that we all learned in kindergarten don't get broken, there's no reason for you or anyone else to put their foot down and say, "Thou shalt not discuss this further."
I've thought about this for a while. No I don't think that flag was originally meant to symbolize oppression and hatred. In fact since the people who fought under it were fighting for their own rights then in many ways its original meaining was to symbolize freedom. Unfortunately today some people have taken it and perverted it to symbolize hatred and superiority of one race over another. Shame on those white supremacits organizations who have done it. Shame on the people on the other side who cry victim and use it to further their own agendas. Shame on the media for perpetrating this misinformation. Having said all that this recent culture HAS changed the meaning of that flag for many people. I regret and mourn this fact but the fact remains. And unfortunately its use today drives a wedge between peoples at a time when we should be pulling together. For that reason I would not fly it.
Locked means locked. It does not mean start a new thread to discuss it again. If you have an issue with this, contact me privately and I'll give you my opinion.
You note this isn't locked - my cut on it is this:
It truly is an inflammatory and sensitive issue that has not been resolved to this day
The early days of slavery in the south would have thrown out "FOUL FLAGS" under the conditions and understandings that we have today.
That "ALL PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO PURSUE THEIR LIFE LIBERTY AND HAPPINESS" modified by the simple notion that IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT COLOR YOUR SKIN IS....
I personally have no problem with that at all.
Or did you fail to realise that "HUMAN BEINGS" had varied complexions?
(He states, drily)

There was no club when this thread started. There was the Pig Pen until about 2004 sometime. The mods were tired of playing referee in there so they closed that one too, and FTE was a very calm place. I think it took them about 6 months to open the club (my time frame may be off a bit).
I can't believe someone found it. I thought it was a new thread until I saw The Name That Is Never Spoken's post. (post 5)
