Had to go out of town on a road trip today and being in NC the day was pretty warm so it was AC time everything went fine until I got to the city and the stop lights where when I had to stop the engine would quit and would not restart,I hate angry car horns, and for some reason I turned off the AC and it started right up Merrily I head down the road only for it to happen again and again. I just don't understand what the AC has to do with the engine not wanting to start until I turn the AC off or even why the engine is stalling in the first place, The idle is probably a tad low at about 550 RPM and I also noticed the ammeter gauge goes to the N in NORMAL at an idle with the AC on. OK any thoughts on this one. This Bad Boy Bronco hasn't got me whipped yet but if it keeps up messing with me I'm going to put new tires on the John Deere and start driveing it to work .Again Thanks in advance, You guys have been dead on with the problems I've posted so far.........Terry
Well, I too made a trip to austin from san antonio today with my friend to pick up his newly bought toyota, the trip went nicely, no problems.
Anyways, if your ammeter is going down that far I would say your alternator is getting weak and needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
About your RPM going down when the AC is on, you have a solinoid next to the carb to bump the throttle up just a tad to make up for the load of the compressor. The low RPM might be contributing to the stalling of the motor, you could try ajusting the idle up just a tad to make up for it a bit.
Just advice ya might state what year and info.
Good luck.
i think your having the same problem i had with my 95, if so it nothing big. check your pvc (pcv or what ever it's called) filter on the top of the lift valve cover and the hose that goes to it. that thing cost about 4 bucks. you can try replaceing it and cleaning out that hose. i had the same thing happen, truck would stall when i came to a stop with the AC on. ammeter and idle did the samething you said. try that and see, good luck. let me know how it goes. austin
Not to make you feel bad but my 89 did the same thing and it was my compressor that was bad. It was like a brake on the engine when at low rpms. Maybe you will get it without the compressor scene.
