Hello I have a 93 bronco with a 5.0 in it
For some reason the coolant comes out of the fill tank, the engine does not over heat, but I always see some coolant on the cap or around it,I have had the thermo replaced also various hoses
Does anybody have any ideas
Thanks
Several people have reported this dilema with the overflow resevoir cap. Some have attributed it to "slosh" while driving and a poorly sealing resevoir cap. Beyond that I don't know of any malfunction that would cause it other than overheating which has been ruled out already.
I have a '96 Eddie Bauer Bronco with 5.0 in it and it does the same thing. Everything is new in the cooling system including radiator cap. I think it is sloshing around and a lousy fit on the coolant resevoir cap.
I just drove my 1990 5.8L 3 miles up a big hill with a 19' boat. After parking it, I notices a big puddle of coolant, which came out of the reservoir (the reservoir was full and drips were still visible on the bottom of the reservoir). I'm guessing maybe 1/2 gallon? I could hear bubbling in the radiator also. During this 3 mile drive the motor temp did not rise significantly.
Can anybody shed some light on this? Is something ready to fail?
Lots of them do this. It's just a bad design IMHO. I solved it by covering the opening of the coolant recovery tank with aluminum foil and then snapping the cap over that.
PS - Tahoe, I think you have a different problem. The poorly designed coolant overflow cap seal only results in a few drips. Not 1/2 gallon. Plus you were hearing bubbling. I think you overheated, regardless of what the gauge said.
Yep, I'm kinda figuring that there is a problem, especially since it was quite a bit more than a few drips from a bad seal.
Any clues to why it "back flowed" through the reservoir? Or is it just boiling the coolant? I haven't added any coolent for three months since I replaced the thermostat.
If the cap is not holding sufficient pressure, boiling coolant may be forcing overflow into the reservoir. Pressure cap causes positive pressure to be maintained on coolant, which prevents boiling. If pressure is inadequate, coolant will boil causing overflow. Temperature may be OK when this happens.
You could try another radiator cap. It's cheap enough. Hopefully that will solve your problem. Also, the coolant recovery tanks can leak at the seams too, where the black top joins the clear tank. I replaced my coolant recovery tank with a brand new one because of this (but it still weeped a drop or two of coolant from the coolant recovery tank cap!)
Just got a new radiator cap and put it on. As I am going out of town, the test run will probably be next week. I'll keep ya posted. Thanks for the input!
