I guess BLING was important to the original owner. Thanks for the heads up about reduced carrying capacity, I need to check that out.
Are they OEM tires or aftermarket? If OEM, there's nothing wrong with those wheels, and they definitely do not reduce any weight ratings. If aftermarket, they're almost certainly lug-centric (not hub-centric), and not all manufacturers even bother giving them weight ratings, so that's all up to you.
I like the factory 20" wheels on the Super Duty's but no, the ride isn't as nice as the 17" winters I run. The big sidewall look went out of style 10 years ago.
I disagree with you on the manual trannys. I believe they quite manuals because of the tune and output of these engines, most people would be tearing the drivetrains apart with improper use. In addition, the autos are as capable as any manual is without going to extreme heavy duty units found in bigger trucks.
the auto flat out works and works hard, regardless of the ya-ho driving it.
The OEMs have less control over the fuel economy and emissions with the manual than the autos. Couple that with the rather poor sales of the manual and like you mentioned higher output diesels. They didn't want to keep it around for the gassers or develop a more robust manual trans for the diesels.
RAM still offers the manual but only behind a detuned 6.7l diesel.
I have 20" rims with Goodyear AT/S tires carrying a Lance 1030 TC (3400+ lbs) and a Mastercraft Prostar 205 boat (~3500 lbs with trailer) and I have no issues with ride comfort or off road. They handle great and fill in the wheel wells at the same time. Also, no weight carrying capacity was lost from 18"s to 20"s. It's all preference when you get down to it. I love the 20"s and like I said, I use them for everything.
What are you towing with the truck that even a "reduced" 3.4x:1 ratio isn't enough when you're pushing 400/800 out of the flywheel? Go drive a 6.9L for a week, and go back to the 6.7L and remember how spoiled you are. You're not putting anything behind a SRW that the 3.55 gearing combo can't handle unless you're blowing your axle weights all to hell, and out of all the weights that it's arguable you can break GAWRs aren't usually on the list because at that point you're probably past the weight ratings of the tires and wheels.
Just bought a new to me 2011 F250 King Ranch CrewCab w/6.7 Powerstroke, auto, 4x4, 3.55 gear, FX4 offroad option, and loaded including these huge wheels. So, what is the functional reason why I'd want to keep the the big wheels? Per the Michelin website, they are taller than the factory standard 18" and effectively reduce the gear ratio from 3.55 to something in the 3.4x range. Sure, they are pretty, that I get. Is that all? Thanks.
Or does the 18 increase your gear ratio to 3.6x?
You won't notice any change because of tire size. Your gear ratio is still a 3.55 in the rear.

Why 20 in tires? It was all that I could get at the time--end of year. But the 20's have 3750 lb max load at 80psi, 18's 3640 lb, 17's 2910. The 20's only come with 3.55 rear ratio, but the 20's = 606 revs/mi, 18's = 628 revs/mi, 17's = 657 rev's/mi. Tire wt, 20's = 61.05 lbs, 18's = 60.7 lbs, 17's = 49.1 lbs....cost per Michelin, (all LTX A/T2 60,000 mi tires). 17's $266, 18's $322, 20's $405 (ouch)...(But the 20's load capacity is not far from 17 in duels.)
I wanted 18's with 3.31 rear end but the 20's with 3.55 has 75 more rpm per mile than the 18's with 3.31. MPG difference should not be noticeable.
Because they look BAD ***!!! and with BIG enough tires, I still don't have to worry about getting curb/rock rash. And I was still able to tow anything I wanted to tow.
It's purely a cosmetic thing. I myself am an 18" wheel guy with M/T's on them. I wanted to run a 35" tire, and 35" M/T's on a 20" wheel doesn't look quite right. Need to have at least a 37" tire on a 20" for it to look "right" usually. IMO the 6.7 trucks can pull of a 20" wheel much better than the older trucks. I have seen trucks with 20's that look great, but the tire cost is going to be a good chunk of money more. I've never seen a wheel bigger than 20" on a Super Duty that I've liked though.
I'm convinced I want to get some Toyo AT2's in 295/70-18 to get back the ~34" size that came from the factory (before I had the dealer swap out the 20's for 18's) and get a little more mud capability than offered by the otherwise good Michelin LTX A/T2. If I had the factory 20" wheels still, I'd stick with the factory size.
Most people want to LOOK badass, I know I am badass so i don't need to have my truck say that. Badasses don't wax their truck every week.
When a badass tries to act like a tough guy around me, or my girlfriend, I kindly ask them to hush up, or I will MAKE them show me how bad they think they are. Haven't been challenged yet.

Funny but nobody can be badass in the Internet. The threat cannot be real.
Some people like big trucks, some like low trucks. Some like fast cars and some like luxury cars. It's your money; do what you want with it.

There's always someone bigger and badder then you are... and when they aren't bigger or badder, smith and wesson make a good equalizer...
