I have a 1980 F-100 straight 6. Its been running great until last night. I drove it for about a 1/2 mile and it stalled, as if i pulled the clutch too soon. Then it wouldn't start up again..tried several times. My husband pushed it out of the road and tried it again about 10 minutes later and it started right up..drove it home, but the whole way it was chugging like it was going to die.
Any ideas what could be going on?? thanks!
I'd say your DSII module or coil has gone bad.
Once they heat up the circuit fails.
Is there a 5x5 aluminum box with two wired plugs going into a blue plastic seal on the drivers side inner fender?
If you remove the three screws from underneath does the plastic filling look boiled?
When it won't start, you need to check for fuel and spark. To big parts of the system, and if you find out which, then you can go down the correct road to recovery.
The quickest way to check for fuel is to take the aircleaner off, and with the engine off look down the carb throat and push the throttle open by hand. A strong stream of gas should pour into the engine.
An easy way to check for spark is to take one of the sparkplug wires off, stick a screwdriver up in the end of the wire, and hold the metal part of the screwdriver very close to something metal on the engine, while someone cranks it over. A spark should jump from the screwdriver metal part to the engine metal part.
