Crankcase vent leak

I have a 53 f100 with a 8 cylinder y block (not original but I think it is a 54). The crankcase vent on the lower drivers side block leaks oil. It seems like it is leaking out of the tube but it is very hard to tell. i find up to a table spoon of oil on the floor after sitting over night. I took off the canister and reseated the gasket. The screen looked clean. No air puffs out of the tube when the truck is running and no oil is coming out of the tailpipe. Is this a design issue or do I need to pursue it further? If it is simply a design issue, how can I get it to stop because it makes a mess on my garage floor and the bottom of my truck. Thanks in advance?

Oil coming from the road draft breather is usually a sign of a tired engine with excessive blowby. In my experience, a drop or two is normal after a hard run. Did you check the gasket from the tube to the block? If I remember right, two bolts. How about fumes from the filler cap when the engine is idling? Screen in the filler cap clean?

And BTW, welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was going to check the tube gasket next. i checked the bolt tightness but that was ok. The screen looked clean but I was going to replace it anyway. I was worried about blow by but I heard that you would feel air puffing out of the tube while it was idling if it was blow by. I am not sure if that is true. I have been trying to locate a site where I can buy a replacement tube gasket because i am assuming it might get damaged when i loosen the bolts to check, but I could only find the canister gaskets. I guess I can make one, unless you have a recommendation where I can buy one. And that you for the warm welcome!

Road draft tube leaks and smoke and filler smoke comes in various stages. Puffing at the filler or draft tube is usually indicative of more serious problem like a broken compression ring / rings or a broken piston where the combustion is escaping into the crankcase as that cylinder fires. That is where you get the puffing smoke. A more gradual release and notice of smoke is from the filler when the vehicle is stationary and there is no road draft to pull the crankcase gasses downward, under the vehicle.
So far as the gasket, I would make one, so easy.
Good luck and have fun doing what you're doing.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Here's a tutorial Bob put together: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/67...-pictures.html Bob's link is not working. Can someone in the know tell me why?

How to upload pictures to the FTE Forums. - YouTube. Thanks Sam Rusty_Old_F250. Best we can find is that this videio was done by Gundown64

Upper pic: Road draft tube found on the left side of Y blocks thru at least 1960. Notice the 6A631 crankcase ventilation screen that's inside it.

Most people are unaware, so it's never replaced, getting more clogged up every day.

Pressure builds up inside the engine, oil begins blowing out the oil cap, leaking past the 6870 & 6872 gaskets.

i have now tried everything described to stop the small oil drip from the road draft tube. i understand there is a way to close the system by pplugging the draft tube and installing a tube with a PVC valve between the road draft tube cannister and the carb. Does anybody have detailed instructions for that conversion? is there a downside from doing the conversion.
