I am a new owner of a 2000 F350 with the 7.3 TD. I am trying to change the fuel filter and cannot get the filter cap to release the fuel filter. It looks like there is a barbed nipple (that sounds painful) that holds the filter on and I cannot get it to release. Anybody know how to separate the two? Thanks in advance.
I changed mine a while back. In the beginning it was tough, but managed to just twist the fuel filter cap off and replace the filter. One thing I did before I sealed the new filter into the housing was to allow the new one to soak in the fuel for a minute or so, then slid it in. I have a 99 PSD (built in 08/98), and I don't remember seeing a barbed nipple of any kind (unless they changed it between 08/98 and your year). Maybe someone else can chime in about that.
Like Lucca said, it should just come off. There is a nipple (i guess you could call it), but no barb. I can't just pull mine off, I have to twist it before I can get it to come off (01 F-250). Oh man this is just rife with double entendres.
Wait, I just re-read your post. Is the filter stuck to the cap or can you not get the cap off?
The filter is stuck in the filter cap. I tried twisting and pulling at the same time. I tried putting the edges of the cap between my shoes while I pulled on the filter. I tried prying off with a screwdriver, but there was no place on the filter to pry it off. I thought about cutting the filter in two, so I could access whatever is holding it in place, but I knew if that did not work, I couldn't put it back together. So, I am still stuck.
I'll be driving by the dealer this a.m. and will look at the cap at the parts department to see if I can figure it out.
I have seen aftermarket fuel filters that have the filter and cap as one peice. I cann't remember where but I do remember thinking it was a wierd idea...
Cobaum,
I had a similar problem in that I couldn't find the right filter for the cap. In my case the filter wouldn't fit ON the nipple. I ended up just getting a new cap that matched the new filter and tossing the other. Some sort of after market thing. I tried for weeks to find the other filter.
Cobaum,
There is an aftermarket filter that has the filter attached to it's own cap. I believe it's a Puralator brand. They do that so you can't replace it with another brand. They want you to continue buy thiers. If that is the case with yours, I would recommend getting an original cap from your local dealer, then you can replace the filter without that problem.
Thanks for the help guys. It probably is a aftermarket filter. That does beg the question - What is a good aftermarket filter that is cheap? The filter I bought at the dealer (that does not work) is $55. And at one filter every 15,000 miles, I had better find a cheap place to get them.
Cobaum,
I got both at the local Napa store. I don't have a lot to choose from here but, I think it cost me $50 for filter AND cap. The cap is good forever, the filter is around $30 +/- . I haven't heard of any aftermarket filters yet. Mine seems to be fine so far.
There are many outlets for filters online. One such may be this site's store (MotorHaven). Another is Diesel Injection Service. They sell OEM Racor filters for around $15 plus shipping. Of course, you'll still need the OEM filter cap to accept this filter.
I replaced my factory fuel filter two weeks ago ... the dealer wanted about $90us for it so went for the aftermarket Baldwin brand cost was about $19us. The filter and cap are one piece and uses a "o" ring instead of the flat type seal of the factory filter.
Followed the instructions ... torqued the cap down at 15 ft lbs. Low and behold at the fuel station last Monday I smell diesel as I pull up. Upon lifting the bonnet I see a wet filter housing and a couple of ounces of diesel in the valley cover. AARRRRGGGHH !!!
The station owner lent me a 1/2inch drive I nipped the filter cap up 1/8 of a turn wiped everything down, filled up and drove off.
Been checking every drive and cap hasnt leaked since.
Still not confident with it .... so will order the racor ones from Motorhaven and go back to factory cap !!! Even by the time I pay freight and import duty these would work out cheaper !!!
The verdict is in. The cap is a Puolator. The cap and filter do not come apart. A replacement Purolator filter and cap assembly is $26 at Pep Boys. The cheapest I found a filter alone was $17 plus $5 shipping at Diesel injection Service. So, for a couple of dollars, I will just replce with the Purolator and not worry about it.
