1973 F100

Have 73 f100 with 360 v8. Want an aluminium 4 barrel intake. Also need advise on Ford heads. Might make into a 390 ci. This is my first Ford project. Have owned truck since new.
Want to improve intake and exhaust with manifold, carb, and headers. Good used parts welcome.

Best single thing you can do without a lot of work is go to headers and dual exhaust. Then an aluminum intake and a 600-650 cfm 4bbl carb.
Leave the heads as-is for now with the exception of a good valve job.
If you want to go into the short block the two best things you can do is make it a 390 and get rid of the anemic compression ratio of the stock 360. This can all be done with stock parts.
As far as cam goes, that depends on how you are going to use your truck.

2x with Mike... headers with 2.5 inch mandrel bent tubing. Mufflers of your choice. Typically, the longer they are, the quieter they are.

Intake... Edelbrock 2105 and a 4V Holley or Edelbrock up to 650 cfm. Stick with vacuum secondaries for the street.

Ford FE heads? For the cost of upgrading/rebuilding stock heads ya might as well go with Edelbrock Performer aluminum heads.

Cam... depends.

Ignition. Keep it simple with a Duraspark system or Pertronix module.

For a lil "go".. think nitrous oxide for the best bang for the buck.

Btw, what IS the budget and will you be doing the work yourself???

First things first...swap in a 390 rotating assembly, any mods to a 360 are pretty much pointless.

After that... X2 on the headers/dual exhaust, the stock FE logs are the biggest horsepower robber on the motor.

Next...install a pre '72 timing set (straight up)

A little bigger bumpstick e.g. Comp Cams 270H

Enjoy your FE

Montana, does the earlier timing set apply across the board, as in could I do the same thing to my 302 with an earlier timing set?

Blue, I wish I could give you a definitive answer but i'd only be guessing if I said yes.

I do know it applies to FE's though.
