I've been running a rebuilt 351W for about 500 miles now. It has a new distributor and a new Holley Truck Avenger carb. When in gear and between 1000 and 2000 rpm it has problems with surging and trying to stall. The happens when the engine is cold or warm. Any ideas as to what to look for? I am slowly trying to make sure that all my vacuum hoses are correct. Once I get a vacuum gauge to install what type of readings should I get?
I find that at idle 12 to 16 are acceptable numbers. This may be a vacuum leak around the base of the new carb, some rubber line that is cracked or otherwise damaged, or even the intake manifold.
Get some carb cleaner or other spray cleaner that is NOT flammable and with the engine idling, spray it all around the base of the intake manifold, the base of the carb, and all your vacuum lines. If while spraying, the engine suddenly changes speed and smoothes out, you've found the leak!
I tried with the WD40 but go no change in the engine's running. I'll have to track down one of the nozzles for the WD40 and make sure I can get it down to the manifold edge to see if there is a leak around there.
SOunds like the engine is running lean. Richen up the main side of the carb. Had the same problem with my 289 years back. Went one two sizes bigger and raise the float level, cured the problem.
