is this something a dealership would have to do or should most shops be able to do this?
Either a dealership, or anyone who has an IDS scan tool can do it. SOMETHING, has to be out of spec under a certain operating condition that causes P0401 to be reset. An Air Management Test will monitor MAF, EBP_A, MAP, EGR_DC, EGR_VP, EOT, IAT#1 and IAT#2 etc. under a certain set of conditions through a series of tests. Which one is out of spec, is what needs to be determined in order to determine the next step in an attempt to correct this issue.
Well I called the ford dealer today and they said an air management test would run about $300 after tax. I don't mind spending the money but I don't like waisting it either. Would I be better off just guessing at sensors (I looked today and for $350 I could get the map, Maf, eot, and iat. Or would deleting the egr make this go away? Or just do the test then buy the bad part? Thanks again for help and look forward to the suggestions.
A little update. My P0401 is still there and i also have a P0678. about a month ago I noticed that my coolant was a little low and I added about a 1/2 gal which brought it back up to the top mark on my bottle. tonight i checked it again and it took another 1/2 gal. The are no white spots on my degas bottle and my temps have been running 192 & 198 every day to and from work. (40 min drive at 65mph). today with the goosneck and backhoe it still was only 202 & 210 after 45 min at 60mph. as i said earlier my old egr valve was full of carbon but it was gooie.
the P0678 looks like a bad #8 glow plug and plan to change that out monday or tuesday. I wouldn't assume these could be related.
after reading many many post I just wonder if this P0401 could be caused from my EGR cooler going bad? Please let me know if you can think of anything else to check to confirm or disprove.
Hope everybody is enjoying the Cardinals going up 2-1 last night and look for them to close it out over the next 2 nights.
You may know already, but the top mark is the old full level. There was a TSB that lowered the full level to a 1/4in or so below the old add mark. Some trucks have a sticker indicating the newer lower level. Apparently a truck with no issues can vent coolant if the level is too high.
yea i remember seening something about it but i couldn't remember which mark is full and which is add. I filled it up about 75% of the bottle. and in a month it was down to about 15%-20% of the bottle.
No white residue on the degas bottle? The coolant has to be going somewhere. Its possible with the gooey mess of a egr valve that your cooler ruptured. You can confirm by parking slightly nose down and pull the egr valve the next morning to have a look.
Going to park nose down tonight and pull the EGR valve in the morning and take a look. also I'm about to order 4 glow plugs and the harness. Its the number 8 glow plug so its drivers side. I looked at Tousley so is driver side the Left or Right side? thanks, rhine
I've changed #8 without pulling the fenderwell. Just pulled the air filter if I remember right. Not sure on harness part no.
With my truck having 170K what do you think my chances of getting the boot off the glow plug with out tearing up the harness???
I will probally go ahead and order 4 glowplugs and the harness but if i can easily get #8 changed without breaking it I'll just stick the extra harness and glowplugs in the shop for the next time i have one go.
Diesel Tech Ron has a video on you tube about changing glow plugs on a 6.0. He shows how he modified a tool to pull the connectors. It might work for you. I do a lot a safety wiring and have pulled a few without breaking them using .32 wire and safety wire pliers, but to be honest they are brittle and easy to break and odds are against you. You will have to use the force Luke.
I don't think the harness is terribly expensive.

Well i'll give it a shot, caint hurt to try. there not bad at all. it looks like $37 for the harness and $10 per glow plug. just have to figure out left or right side. I'll give them a call tomorrow and get it headed my way.
For a 2006 6.0L F-series the correct part number is 5C3Z-12A690-A for the driver side glow plug harness, in answer to your question.
Getting back to your P0401 that won't go away, it appears the only other possibility you haven't looked into, is the possibility of plugged EGR passages in the intake manifold and/or the EGR passages in the EGR cooler itself. Better yet, has a previous owner of your truck blocked off the EGR cooler by welding in a frost plug inside the up-pipe perhaps?

Thank you for the part numbers. as far as what the previous owner did i don't have a clue. He passed away and his wife sold the truck. it had 77k 2 years ago when i got it now it has almost 180k. I have not looked at the up pipe to see if it has been welded up.
To clean the EGR passages in the intake would i need to pull the whole intake or just pull the valve again and try agian with a brush and vaccume it back out?
If it is the passages in the EGR cooler itself would i be seeing higher delta's as I drive?
sorry for all of the questions I appreciate all of the help so far.
