I have a 95 F250 XTL 4x4 with the 5.8L 5sp man. It has a 129k on the motor. The motor has an exhaust man leak on the right bank and the motor ticks when it starts for about 30 seconds then it gets quiet. I was thinking about swapping the motor out to an I6. What are the pros and cons to doing this?
Better gas mileage?
Stronger or weaker drive train?
Will the trans bolt up or will that have to be changed also?
I would think a mild rebuild on the 351 would be a better option. Its going to cost a little bit to swap every thing over and the gain in MPG would not make up for the dramatic lose in power. If it was a 302 it would be a different story but the 351 makes good torque and horsepower.
You would need a good condition 300, wiring harness, ECU, exhaust manifold, change the front part of the exhaust system, motor mounts, and so on. Guessing about $1200-$1500 in parts before it is all said and done. For the you could do a full rebuild on the 351 with a few goodies.

That could just be an old or poor quality oil filter, they contain an anti drainback valve which is made of plastic on the cheap filters which tends to warp and leak in a short period of time thus allowing the engine to drain of oil while sitting overnight.

Cons: You have to change the frame towers and motor mounts, engine wiring harness, computer, rad and hoses, flexplate, accessories and brackets, and exhaust and for all that work you end up with a motor that makes less torque and far less horsepower so it'll be slower at everything it does.
Pros: It might get slightly better fuel milage empty but only slightly, ignore all fuel milage claims you see posted from guys with 1/2 ton trucks with lincoln towncar gearing, it doesn't apply to a heavy truck with work truck gearing.
The 300 is a good towing motor but has very limited performance in fuel injected trim. You have to really work the heads over to get any good flow out of them and that cost a good bit of $$$$. The ECU is limited so the only real way to make decent power is to go carb or mega squirt which also cost a little $$$$ both options are not going to be easy or cheap.
Your 95 came with better flowing heads then most of the 351s from that generation and made 215hp and 320tq. Low end power below 2200 RPM's was about 80ft-lbs more then a 302. Steeping down to a 300 you would be giving up almost 60 hp and still lose some torque.
Ok so I guess the way to go is to keep the 351 and make do. I was going to do an oil change and filter this weekend and try to fix the manifold leak while I was at it. The only thing I can't seem to get to is the PCV. I was told it was on the right rear of the engine but there is only a tube back there that wraps around the right side and the PCV seems to be placed on top of the rear of the right valve cover but I can't get it out because it's tight up against the intake manifold...(Trapped between the two. Any ideas or suggestions on how to remove would be appreciated.
Hey thanks F100, at least I know what the heck I've been pulling at. I was pretty sure I was right but I figured I'd ask....I must have messed with the thing for 30 minutes and couldn't get to do anything but wiggle side to side a little bit....I've only owned the truck a little less than a year but I bet it's never been changed.
