fuel pump/sending unit problems

Just bought a 93 F250. Rear tank works, front doesn't. Turn on the key, can hear the rear pump, but not the front. Gauge shows empty, but I know there is gas in there, guy told me front works, rear doesn't. put all the gas I brought in then he says "Ooops, I meant rear works" Anyway, before I start tearing everything apart, what should I check first, and how much disassembly needs to be done.

Thanks,
John

Only one pump will work at a time depending where the switch on the dash is set to.

Check the switch on the dash first, then the power to the pump that does not run.
Not sure I fully understand what you wrote above.

The dash switch does two things, switches the power to the pumps and switches the sending units so the appropriate tank level reads on the dash.

Check the switch, wiring and connector on the top of the tank.

OK, sorry. only the rear tank works. Turn key on with switch on the rear, gauge shows fuel, can hear pump pressurize and truck will start. Turn key on with switch on the front tank, gauge shows empty, pump is silent and truck doesn't start. I guess Id like to know the easy checks like if each sending unit has its own fuse and which fuse it is, shortcuts to getting to the pump/sending unit.

No fuses with the sending units.
Power to both sending units comes from the cluster gauge.

Sounds like the float sunk in the front tank and the pump in the FDM is bad.
