Tranny Towing Problem
This weekend my tranny started searching for gears while towing my 5000# trailer. After a while the tranny locked into a low gear and wouldn't shift out of it. Theroblem occured once before on a three hour tow. It seems that the tranny is holding in first or second gear and not up-shifting,causing the engine to overspeed. I believe that the tranny is overheating but am not sure since there is no guage or light. E-350 PSD 3.55 Any sugestions?

What year is the rig?
1. There is a TSB for early 2001 4R100 transmissions, with problems like you describe.
2. Most units built before mid-2000 need to be retro-fitted with a new radiator/trans-cooler.
3. Invest in a temp gauge.
4. Switch to syntho fluid (more heat tolerance) in your new trans mission.

I thought 03s had a trans temp gauge.
Which PSD? What trans?

5. Get a Magnefine in-line filter (if not there already).
Are you towing in OD with those 3.55 gears? If so, don't. Your trans will be overworked. Use the OD or tow/haul lockout button.

I have to double check my gear ratio, with OD off the engine is reving pretty high at 65-70mph.
There is not temp guage on my tranny temp guage on my rig. I'll try them other recs you made thanks.

My bad for asking which PSD.
I forgot the new 6.0L isn't offered on the E series. The 4R100 your rig has is well known for problems (I'm on my 3rd).
Get a gauge if you plan on keeping the rig, $70 well spent.
The 3.55 LS is an option with the PSD on the E's.
Your drivetrain warranty should take care of those issues, financially. Good luck.
