My wifes 96 powerstroke is giving lots of trouble getting it started,the temp her is not to cold yet and even when its warm it gives trouble,my 96 7.3 will start up most mornings without the use of glow plugs during summer,i have my gps hooked up to a push button in the cab so i run them when they are needed,She has to cycle her glow plugs a couple of times to get it to start and once it has started it runs very rough and sounds sick,as soon as it gets up to temp it runs great but it does lug way down then gets up to idle slowly upon start up,these morning mine will start without the glow plugs so i start to think there is something else going on with hers,my thoughts are bad glow plugs but the guy we bought it from had changed them and the solinoid works because after a couple of cycles the truck starts but hard,injectors or hpop were my next thought,could they be going out,is that a good place to start looking now or shall i try something else?
I'd ohm the glowplugs and injectors just to be knowing what kind of shape they and the harnesses are in. Fuel filter clean? Notice anything in the fuel bowl? What kind of fuel pressure? I'd test the gpr too. Testing is free, and good to know what is going on for sure.

The fuel filter is clean and the bowl just had a little bit gunk in the bottom is all and the rest of the stuff ill have to go check
How long do the glow plugs run when you leave the key in RUN?
What brand of glow plugs are installed? What brand and type of relay?
The glow plugs seem to stay on for a good maybe 20 secs or so it seems to be staying on the same amount of time mine use to and he never said anything about the brand ill give him a call and get some info on that,the relay i am not sure on to
They should stay on a lot longer than that on a stone cold engine, even in warm weather. One to two minutes. Then again, 20 seconds should be plenty of run time for it to start.
If they're not Motorcraft/Beru ZD-11 glow plugs, and esp. if they're Autolites, you should remove them anyway. Otherwise you run the risk of them swelling up when they fail, and they can be difficult to impossible to remove, sometimes requiring removal of the cylinder head.

That would be a big job and a half that i don't want to do hahaha im thinking i will have to pull them myself to see since the guy i bought it from isn't answering hahah i dont want to pull no heads

The glow plugs stay on long after the WTS light goes off. Watch the volts gauge. When the glow plugs are on, the needle will only be up about a quarter of the way. When the GPs go off, the needle will jump up about to the middle of the gauge. Instead of cycling the key every time the WTS light goes out, just let it sit there and watch the gauge.

I went and checked that and the voltage stays down for a bit while its running so i think its staying on like it should from what i can tell do you think the hpop level may be a concern? im wondering if it being low will cause any trouble i havent checked it yet i need a good tool to open it up
IIRC it's a 1/4 inch allen wrench/socket. I just took mine out today, but didn't pay attention to the socket size.
Did you do any testing yet?
I haven't yet,i need to get me a fuel pressure gauge,my injector wires are good on the outside anyway they are plugged in good and look good as well,i need a computer program or some type of computer to check injectors so i dont have to go to the shop i dont have much as far as testing tools go,is there a way to test injectors at all with out the computer? at the moment im limited to what all i can do i had hurt myself at work the otherday and im off trying to heal up again otherwise i would have pulled my valve covers to do some more searching and hunting down the brands on my glow plugs and stuff im trying to hurry better i want to get this truck up on its feet better im going crazy hahah
