f150 1985 Idle problem

My 1985 f150 will not idle, it dies.

It runs fine when I increase slight pressure on the pedal, but dies when I let up. I can't find a screw to increase the idle. There is a questionable vacuum looking idol control thing I wonder about?

Anyway, how can I increase the idle slightly so it doesn't die?

First off, let me welcome you to the forum.

Ok, now I would tell you to start by checking all of your vacuum lines and caps. I know on mine that I have to replace the vacuum caps on the carb tree from time to time. It would appear that they just don't make the vacuum lines and caps like they used to. Now they wear out so much quicker. In fact, I even keep an assortment box of caps in my glove-box. That would be the first place that I would start looking.

You have to set-up an account in photobucket.com or another photo hosting site.

I've added three pics. Looks like there might be a vacuum hose missing, but I don't know where it goes. Is there an idle increase screw?

Ok, I have the 4.9L, 300 cu.in. 6 cyl. and just can't help you with where that goes to. But, it looks like you have more than one vacuum line disconnected (maybe). I would maybe suggest just to cap it off and see what happens. Maybe then you could find where the other end is supposed to be... maybe.

I also think that some else that knows more than I do about your set-up will come by soon and give you more advice. Good luck.

And by the way, where are you located?

Some carbs had these for different reasons; there is probably a long, thin bolt on the drivers side of this unit that shifts the whole thing backwards & forwards, & adjusts the throttle stop position.

It isn't immediately obvious because it faces backwards, with the head facing away (towards the cab)....& some didn't have a proper head, just a square end.

Even if the vac line to it is gone, the idle adjuster will still work.

Okay, thanks Ken. I'll check that out. Sounds like a good idea. The whole body of the think can shift forward or backward. That could be the ticket. I never noticed that missing vac tube before and then when I got looking at it I noticed the vacuum looking can down on the manifold without a connection??

That's an exhaust heat control valve that originally closed when the engine was cold to send the exhaust over to the other manifold, & sped up engine warm-up.
They are vacuum operated by a temperature sensitive valve (ported vacuum switch) that is in contact with the coolant.

Do you have any picture on your passenger side of the engine we can look at?

Ken, I messed around with that control unit you mentioned and got it idling again. I loosened two nuts on the unit and tried to move it forward but it wouldn't move forward that I could tell. But when I tightened the nut on the spring bolt it increased the idle enough to prevent it from dying.

Thanks for your help.

I'm also including a pic from the passinger side of the engine that J.Green asked about.

Running good now.
