Front end really bad humming

The front end on the ex started humming really bad today after driving 350 miles to Memphis Tennessee. When I noticed the humming I pulled over and unlocked the hubs thinking the front axle is low on gear oil. No change when back on the interstate. If I turn right at highway speeds the noise completely goes away. While driving straight its pretty loud. The more I turn left the louder it gets. Just had the front end apart to do all ball joints tie rod ends etc. the hubs looked great and didnt have any play at all. The noise happens between 40-65 mph. After 70 mph the noise goes away. Doesn't go away when I let of the pedal, hit the brakes, put in neutral while driving, or accelerate. Could it be the hubs?

Sounds like a front wheel bearing to me. When you steer right, that loads the left side bearings and vice versa... maybe try jacking the front end and spin the tires one at a time. You can use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope against the spindle to help you make the call. Wrap your hand around the end of the handle to create a seal then put your ear to your hand. Hope this helps!

Could be a bad belt on the tire too. Rotate the tires and see if the sound moves.

If it turns out to be front wheel/hub bearings...get the Timken ones. believe it or not Auto Zone has best price on the ones for our truck.

I had the same exact problem, drivers side front, the noise was right under my left foot if I sat in the seat with my left leg at 90 degrees. So not up by the pedals but closer to the seat. I was convinced it was a wheel bearing. I even bought the little Riff Raff grease adapter to grease the hubs through the ABS sensor.

But before I got around to greasing or replacing anything, it was time for a free tire rotation at Big-O. And you know what, the noise is gone! I have to believe it was a tire. Now I don't know if I have a bad tire or if I should just let it go.

Anyhow, jmatthews has a point about the tires and rotating them. I'd try that first.

Every 7500 miles which is about 1 month for this truck I balance and rotate tires, change oil, change fuel filter, clean air filter, and get the truck fully detailed by professional. Don't think it's the tires but will find out in 1500 miles.

It happened to me, I thought it was a bearing and put in a new one but it didn't help. Put one on the other side, still no help. Then I rotated my tires at 5k like always and the sound moved to the rear. A belt broke in my tire in between tire rotations.

It is a cheap thing to eliminate anyway, I would try before buying 2 new unit bearings like I did haha. Though at almost 200k I probably needed them anyway.

Just got back on the interstate to go home and had the noise for 20 miles, made a big right loop onto another interstate and the noise vanished. Perfectly quiet for the last 50 miles.

Another mystery but tires can sound like bad wheel bearings especially when aggressive tires get worn down.

Have bfg all terrains. They arent aggresive. Noise went away. Can't be tires now. I'm thinking one of the hubs didnt fully disengage or wheel bearing.

Timken manufactures the wheel bearing assemblies for Ford.

Those were my first two thoughts, if the noise is gone now it was most likely the hubs not disengaging.
