Comin up my road tonight I was pullin my big trailer and the truck seemed to have a power problem. I had it down in 2nd gear and going up hill pretty steep mind you 20 -25 mph maybe less and wanted more go and pushed the pedal to the floor expecting first gear and no downshift. I can manually put it there the rpm around 4000. not going to first gear the motor just wasn't making any power in 2nd right on the floor... trailer weight about 6000 lbs.
4.10 auto 5.4 other than that runs great.
It wont shift at all. 2nd gear selection is 2nd only, even from a dead stop.In fact on steep boat ramps or such if you are having wheel spin problems, put in 2nd and the wheels will hardly spin and you will pull right up with no problem.
I don't think so. You gotta be kidding me I never heard of such a thing with an automatic trans...Putting it in 2nd only limits 3rd and overdrive. If I am wrong I stand corrected But you will have to prove that one.... Gonna go and get my owners manual out of the truck Later..... Just think What if your right! LOL
My truck 2000 superduty V10 when in 2nd it is second gear only!I can put it in 2nd and completly stop, and when i take off it is still in second. If i remember correctly the manual says to use in situations like i earlier mentioned to avoid wheelspin.MY TRUCK 2ND GEAR IS 2ND GEAR ONLY!
Yes I see said the blind man. Well I don't know what to say looks like you fella's are right I don't see how they could design something different after all these years of tranny's.
When I'm in 2nd and I mash it I wanna go to first. All the old tranny's do that. They had a cable or the computer did it.
If I left it in drive and mashed it would it have gone to 1st???
Yeah the older ones with kickdown rods and such would downshift.Next time you get in your truck 99350, put it in 2nd and it should stay in 2nd.What i do is i checked my rpms while in each gear winding them out and checking my speed. This will give you some kind of an idea as to when to manually downshift.Example at about 60 mph i can pull it down to 2nd gear without blowing something up.
Originally posted by nafzimo Yep, 2nd means 2nd. I use it to take off in the snow sometimes. My '98 Taurus is the same way.
Yep. I never realized until I paid close attention and tried it this morning. At normal acceleration you can't even tell -- I guess that's a benefit of lots of torque and a torque converter. I stand corrected.

Uh, nope, not all. I have a 1989 F350 CC 351 and a good old fashioned C6. 2nd gear is second gear on that transmission, as well as the stock TH400 in my 1967 Impala SS.
Yup! Thats the way its supposed to work! Nothing new about it either- my old 1965 mustang started in second in the D2 position.
Also, on 1966 pontiac catalina the d2 notch was labeled "S" ; I assumed that it stood for "snow" or "slippery"

Ford- put it in 2ND it starts and stayys in second (thats the i want it) better traction on snow-ice . Dodge -Chevy if you put it in seconds it starts in 1ST then shifts 2ND ( at least all the ones i tried did)
I know this is a thread revival from over a decade ago (what can I say, I get bored and start reading from the beginning of the forum. Makes me feel better having a new to me 99, when everyone else was taking delivery of their brand new 99's. )
Wow! That's crazy! I had I no idea it would start in second. I'll for sure give it a try here soon. My mind is blown, I haven't ever had a truck or car that does that before. Awesome!
