87 Ranger w/2.9, the catalytic converter seems to be loading up and the emission light is on and idle/acceleration is erratic. Any suggestions? Where do I start? Codes?

Welcome to FTE!!!

I would start with codes since the CEL is on. Also checking fuel pressure and a general look at everything would also be good.

Same here, if you smell the egg smell, its time to replace the cats.

Before buying a new cat there is something else to consider. I've experienced this condition (egg) when an engine is running rich and the cats are working like mad to reduce CO. Left uncorrected, the cat will eventually plug. Like Ken00 suggested, pull the code(s) first, correct the problem and see if the "egg" goes away.

Cat is relativley new, I pulled codes 22, 31, and 63. I'm going to replace the EGR valve, EVP sensor, and oxygen sensor and do a complete tune-up. Then I will re-evaluate. I suspect a vacuum leak may be the culprit. Thanks for the feedback guys.

What type of codes are they, you should service KOEO then KOER and then continuous. Also the 22 is the MAP and 63 is the TPS. You should run the pinpoint tests before replacing anything, they will determine the exact cause.

Well Ken, I'm replacing the EGR valve and EVP because it is recommended in the maint. sched. @ 60K intervals. I just bought this old truck and I'm going to bring all routine maintenance stuff up to date and then re-check codes.
Thanks,
Bart

Sorry for the delay on the update, but here it is. I think it's important that members follow up on their truck problems so we can learn from each other's experiences. This message board is filled with posts from people with problems, but most of them never post about how the problems were finally resolved.

After doing all of the Ford recommended 60K service, the truck started to run better by the day. After about 500 miles, it ran very well.

It still runs good, today, three years later. But it starting to feel "loose" in the front-end; rusting badly; and the tailshaft in the transmission has a lot of play. I don't know if it will pass state inspection. If it does not pass, it's off to the junkyard. I'm not going to put any money into it to make it pass inspection.
