I had the fuel pump assembly, filter assembly replaced and fuel system flushed at 81,300 miles. As far as I'm concerned, these parts should last the life of the vehicle but they didn't. So, we suck it up and move on.
Two years and 15,000 miles later and the same thing happens again.
Must have been a bad batch of pumps that Ford bought into but I was staring at another sizeable repair bill for the same work.
Before you say it, I'll tell you that we never allow the tank to get below 1/2 full. There's simply nothing else that can be done to protect the pump, as far as I know. Both jobs were performed at two different Ford dealers.
Any thoughts on how to prevent this again in the future?
Probably a silly question but are you sure they used factory replacement parts? I've had bad luck with parts store fuel pumps- especially Airtex and Bosch. Seems like they last between a week and a year. I pretty much only use Denso or Delco/Delphi. Never had to replace those more than once.

It could've also been a one time issue with bad fuel in your area. Perhaps others around town had their pumps go out as well. I don't know, I'm just pointing it out as a possibility.
It was definitely a motorcraft pump. The service writer told me that he had to put two pumps in an Explorer within 18 months.
I contacted Ford asking for some relief here but as expected, they reminded me that I was way out of the 12 month 12K mile warranty. I didn't expect Ford to help out but it didn't hurt to ask.
Now I don't even dare to take the damned truck out of town. Two pumps in 15K miles. These trucks are well built and this issue should never have happened in the first place.
It definitely should have never happened. Too bad Ford won't do anything to help you out. Maybe ask the mechanic's at the dealer if they have any insight as to why it prematurely failed. Was the sock/strainer really full of crap?
I'm sure hoping that this is a fluke and not indicative of Ford's future quality. In 24 months, I've invested $2000 in pump assemblies and labor. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Otherwise the Expy has been a trooper and has done all that we asked.
I'm pretty ticked off right now and I'm sure that I'll get over it eventually, but, I'll make two guarantees in my current state of anger:
After all warranties expire on all of my Fords, they will never see the inside of a Ford dealership again and,
The next time I purchase, my search and research will be a little broader and my blind loyalty of 35 years will be gone by the wayside.
All I asked Ford to do was to cover the cost of the pump assembly and nothing more. They told me to call my dealer for more assistance. My dealer discounted the bill by over $200, he did plenty.
Anyway, rules are rules and a line has been drawn, I respect that.

To a certain extend yes. Like if the fuel pump went out at 101K miles with a 100K mile warranty. But when it only lasts 15K and 24 months, then something is wrong with your product and you should back it up.
