Fuel Leak

I have a 2005 Ford F-350 dually with the 6.0L diesel Power Stroke engine.

I seem to have developed a fuel leak under the fuel filter housing at the location of the red arrow.

I see two knurled hex bolts at the blue arrow locations. Should I check to make sure these bolts are tight? Is there a gasket under this plate that might have worn out?

I'm a shade tree mechanic from years ago, but this is my first diesel. Any help is appreciated.

That is the fuel pressure regulator housing and there is an oring on that cover, if you haven't done so now would be the perfect time to do the blue spring upgrade to the fuel regulator, AutoNation Ford White Bear Lake Parts (previously Tousley Ford Parts) . You can try to snug it up but be very careful as the housing is aluminum and the bolt holes are easily stripped.

that is the fuel pressure regulator housing under those 4 screws. If it is leaking i would order a blue spring upgrade and change out the oring under that cover as well as increase the fuel pressure. If you overtighten those screws your pretty much screwed as they strip extremely easy. beaten by 1 min mustang. we must have been typing at the same time...lol

I agree with the guys above me. That o-ring is prone to drying out and leaking. You can't over-tighten or you will strip out the aluminum housing. More work for you. The problem is, there are no torque values. "Snug" is all they tell you. You could try tightening it for a short term fix, but it WILL leak again. It happened to me. I assume you are smelling fuel at a red light? I did the blue spring upgrade and it helped TREMENDOUSLY on the acceleration from a dead stop too. So it's a double bonus.

You'll be glad you ordered the kit. That's all you need. There is a kit with the cover too, and unless you know for sure that your cover is cracked/warped etc, you only need the blue spring kit without the cover.

Thanks for all the quick replies. It helped tremendously. I'll be getting the Blue Spring upgrade and installing it tomorrow.

So, I installed the Bleu Spring mod, but now it seems that the increase in fuel pressure is causing the fuel filter cap to leak. I looked, but didn't see a gasket on this cap. I've tightened it as much as I dare with a plastic cap, but it's still leaking.

Any further suggestions, guys?

The upper fuel filter cap has an O ring. Are the cap and filter OEM's? If so remove the cap and check for cap and/or O ring damage. If none is found, coat the O ring with oil and tighten till the cap bottoms out. No additional torque needed. The O ring seals not the threads. Also when tightening use a socket, not the square drive. The square drive will crack the cap. Ford should have never made it available.

The o-ring seems to be fine, but it's a definate square cross-section. I would have expected it to be more round. Is it just worn out?

It is not uncommon for the cap o-ring to leak. If it looks flat, you should replace it.
