1963 F250
New guy here.
I am looking at buying a 1963 F250, that is forsale in my local area. My main concern is that it's a straight six when I was wanting a V8. However it is cheap enough that I can convert it later on. I believe it is a 300 cube Canadian motor. The truck also has dual rear wheels, so I am guessing it is fairly low geared?
How do these travel on the highway? Will I be able to cruise at 60 mph?
Thanks in advance.
I believe it is a 300
cube Canadian
motor. The truck also has dual rear wheels (DRW's),
so I am guessing it is fairly low geared? No such thing as a Canadian only engine, same engines used in the US & Canada.
300 (and 240) I-6's introduced in 1965 .. intake/exhaust manifolds located on the right (passenger *) side.
223 I-6 standard equipment engine 1961/64, 262 I-6 optional 1963/64. Intake/exhaust manifolds located on the left (drivers *) side.
No F250 was available with DRW's until 1985 .. so it's been converted (by whom and from what?) to DRW's.
The F250's rear axle is a Spicer/Dana 60, the ratio could be 4.10/4.56/4.88-1. Conversion may have included an F350's Spicer/Dana 70 rear axle, minimum ratio: 5.13-1.
IMO: PASS! 1961/64's have front leaf springs, ride and steer like oxcarts. The fact this is a DRW conversion will cause problems if parts need to be replaced, as who knows what they're from.
The only V8 that can be easily swapped is the 292 (1957/64), as it mounts the same way as the 6. If wanting any other V8, expensive mounting kits are your only choice.
1965/66 F100 2WD's far better choice, have coil spring front suspension. Myriad different V8's can be swapped from other trucks.
P/S and disc brakes can be swapped from 1973/79's, while 1961/64's require expensive aftermarket kits.
And, are you sure it's an F250? F250's have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle, while F350's have 6 lug wheels on a 7.25" bolt circle, were available with SRW & DRW.
* Driver & Passenger side refers to US/Canada, where we drive on the correct side of the road. UK, Down Under, South Africa, Japan and etc drive on the wrong side of the road.
