I am having an issue, with the oil light in my '80. I started My truck, after coming out of the store. I noticed the oil light had not gone out,so I pulled to level ground,to check oil level. It was full, as it was when I checked it yesterday. I started it back up, to listen to the engine, and there were no noises, it was running as smooth and quiet as it always has.So i got in,and drove on home.
The 300 engine in it has just over 1000 miles on a complete overhaul (had 500 on it when I bought it 10 months ago). I observed the light as I was driving , and it would go out, then come back on dim, and flickering, go out again, then come back on bright. I am thinking the oil pressure switch is going bad, am I right?
Had this problem on our van, gave us a good scare for a while since we were 100 miles from home. Change the sender. The engine would be thrashing by now if it wasn't the sender.

I would think that the sending unit has gone south...
Like was mentioned before, If you truly lost oil pressure, You would know..
Might be a good time to put a TEE in the block and install a manual gauge when you replace the idiot light sender...that way you have BOTH...Trav.
If the wire going to the sending unit has rubbed through somewhere and is touching metal somewhere, it will cause the same thing. When the sending unit loses pressure, it grounds the wire to turn the light on. So the wire touching somewhere will turn the light on also.

Exactly what I was gonna say... all you need to do is ground that wire anywhere along its length for that light to come on. Same for water temp and BRAKE warning lights.
