I just changed oil in mt niece's '93 explorer. She has a habit of not checking oil, but just adding a quart when the "Check Oil" light comes on. I have told her (to no avail) that when the light comes on it is usually too late and to immediately get off the road in a safe location and check and top off the crancase. Anyway, when she got in last night she said the light had just come on. I checked, and the level was right at the bottom of the hash marks on the dipstick and the oil pressure appeared to be normal. Is there a level indicator that turns on this light? Or is it a pressure switch?
The "Check Oil" light you are refering to is an oil level indicator float type switch. Once the oil level is above the pre-set safe mark and the key is cycled, the lamp will go off.
The oil pressure indicator is tied to a sending unit (switch)that measures when oil pressure is 5 PSI or above. That leaves the dash gague just one step above an idiot light, but makes you feel good anyway when it goes to normal scale.

Thanks! It's good to know she's not running without oil pressure. I don't think I'll let on that the "check oil" light isn't a sign of immediate danger though....
When the check oil light comes on, it is down a litle less than a quart. If it is down that far, it has been on a long time. It is most likelu to trip when the car faces down a slope and once tripped it stays on till the engine is restarted. It is likely that because It goes off the next time she starts it she thinks it is a false alarm. Some people don't care about these things and you won't change them.
